Set Pricing For Audio Mastering is ridiculous!

We have all heard great recordings, bad recordings and everything in between. All recording studios, their environments, engineers and artists are different. So, if all recordings are not created equal, how can mastering be?There are many companies that have set pricing for audio mastering services and what this tells me is whether you are an artist who has enjoyed the environment of a professional recording studio, or recorded your release in your buddy’s basement, you are going to pay the same amount.

Common sense dictates that one recording will probably require more work than the other. Your recording may only need a final tweak or that final boost to bring it within industry standards, but with set pricing you would be paying the same amount as the artist who needs a lot of work. You wouldn’t send your car to a mechanic to be repaired, if they told you it was $1,000 to repair it without even looking at it. So, why would you send your music to a mastering house that is providing you with a price before they ever hear your music?

Under paying for mastering services is just as bad as over paying. So, whichever company you choose to have perform the audio mastering for your demo/release, make sure they are willing to give you an evaluation first!
