Title:
Gebojrn in a sajdn hemdl |
 |
|
Gebojrn in a sajdn hemdl This song is a parable on the vital value of the native Jiddish language. The silken shirt of the inherited mother tongue is like a second skin which should never be given away. The threat of loosing it arises mainly abroad where the danger of loosing ones linguistic identity is particularly imminent.

Songs with political claim
Nizza Thobi continues to draw the thread from historic Wilna to Jerusalem. Poems composed, among others,by Chaim Nachman Bialik, Yehuda Amichai, Pinchas Sadeh, Abraham Shlonsky, Itzik Manger – all these authors come from Europe and go on creating great works from the Yiddish and Hebrew language in their new homeland Israel. Most of them belong to the great modern Hebrew poets. The authors who were not proficient in Hebrew, like Itzik Manger, suffered with respect to literature as being 'abroad', in the diaspora and their poems ebbed away.
The CD also contains composed poems that were created during the misery and the martyrdom of Nazi violence like 'Ghetto'‚'Und ein Knabe wird sie führen' (And a Child will lead them) as well as 'Verriegelt ist meine Tür' (Shut is my door) by Yitzchak Katzenelson. After meeting Mikis Theodorakis in Aachen in November 2005, Nizza Thobi decided to record the ‘Song of Songs’ from The Mauthausen Cycle in Greek. Theodorakis delivered the notes to her. The Mauthausen Cantata was performed on May 7, 1995 under the direction of the composer and conductor Mikis Theodorakis in the memorial Mauthausen. Even songs from the past, i.e. before the European Jews were assassinated, became successful in the America of the 30‘s and 50‘s of the 20th century, like 'Wünscht mir Massel Tow’ (Wish me Maz'l-Tov) and 'Zu spät’ (Too late). With the Munich pianist and arranger Peter Wegele preferring film music, Nizza Thobi has found a musician who writes imaginative and modern compositions. 'Jiddisch is gor nischt asoj schwer' (Yiddish isn't so difficult it all) was set to music by Nizza Thobi in 2005. The text was written by Chaim Frank in 1983. Last but not least: Baal-Shem, Nigun, 2nd Movement of Chassidic life – 1923 from Suite for violin and piano by Ernest Bloch [1880–1959] (Instruments played by Menuchin‘s student Katarina Bassez) is a further dedication of this CD to the donator of Chassidism.
