This is all IMPROV! I dedicate this album to all of my Students, especially: Shawn Pattern, Ruben Nunez, Conrad Ceto, and Patrick Mohan. One night I was scheduled for a long studio session at GP Productions in Studio B. Well, the artist did not show … and by the time I realized that I was not interested in producing this artist anymore, I was deep into working out, and thinking of how I constantly told my students to keep playing no matter what. I had the board set; scratch-mics in place, and all the instruments were tuned and ready for me to use for the session.

I ended up spending the night recording any new melody that came to me. When I got done, it was about 5am. I was finished with 7 tracks. When I got up I continued playing of the top of my head until the other six tracks of Body, Mind & Soul were finished!

I wanted a bass like this (Stanley Clarke Alembic Deluxe) for many years, and as soon as I got it, I was very disappointed. I did not use the Alembic on Body, Mind & Soul.
First, it took weeks for the stores to give me an estimate on how long it would take them to customized the Alembic how I wanted it. Then it took several months for them to send me the wrong bass! The neck was narrow instead of wide, the body was round like Stanley’s instead of what I wanted, and I’d spent hours just to only get about 2-3 different sounds that I could very easily get from my Yamaha.

Of course the Yamaha is nothing to compare with the Alembic, especially the Stanley Clarke Deluxe, but my point is: I got most of what I wanted from a bass that cost 10 times less and is very easy to get.

When I do get the right features that I want in a Stanley Clarke Alembic Deluxe, I will be doing a sequel to this Album. Yes, and I will dedicate a song or two to you Stanley!

This Bass is really satisfying me for this Album. I mean its got the feel, the width, the length, the sound, and most of all, I don’t have to do nothing but make a slight adjustment with the tune to get the colors that I want. The only effect I used on this bass for Body, Mind, & Soul is truly just a little reverb! And I’m playing the lead melody on 12 tracks with this Bass (4 String Yamaha)!

I thought of using “Gramp’s” (my ¾ carved Upright Bass) on Body, Mind, & Soul, but after considering the amount of different tracks I wanted to lay with the electric bass, the students I dedicated this album to, and the nature of my performances following the released of this album, I decided not to use my DBL /Upright Bass on this project.

I never did see any sense in the 5 String Bass … whenever I wanted more higher and lower notes, I’d tune my 4 String Bass out of concert pitch, and I got the sounds and precision by adjusting the neck and bridge … gigs/projects/workshops did most of it with a 4 string. Although I did not use any of them on this album, for tons of notes, I do see a 6 or 7 String Bass making sense.

My 5 string bass? I have several 5 strings,. It’s just a part of my Bass collection. I use the 5 String Bass from time to time…this one ( Ibanez SD GR ) has a really nice sound, and I used it in “Junka My Soul,” the last track (#13) on Body, Mind & Soul. Enjoy!
