And, practice, practice, practice. That's where you end up experimenting freely and coming up with cool new things that make life more fun and exciting.

I was going to suggest maybe you could play another instrument on the side.Sometimes when I get bored on the guitar I pick up my Baratone Ukulele or start playing the piano.

Another idea is to have 2 guitars one acoustic and one electric so that you might get inspired by playing different songs on different guitars.

Maybe a 12 string might be fun to or how about learning the madolin ?

I thought also the suggestion of jamming with someone else wasn't that bad of an idea because whenever I do it I ussually learn something from the other person.

In fairly recent years I learned a new way of playing that I call, Hybrid Picking. When I switch from strumming to fingerstyle picking, instead of putting the pick down, I keep the pick, held in the same way, by the same fingers. I use the pick for the lower range/bass strings and my 2 middle fingers for picking the other strings. That way I can switch back and forth easily between strumming and picking in the same song. I used to only be able to finger pick with my fingers, after putting the pick down. It took me a while to retrain my fingers to pick this way, but was well worth it! Very Happy

Looks like I'm, going to to be the odd man out here with my 2 cents worth of advice. I should be used to this, but.... sigh............

STOP screwing around with the tab crap. All that may do is make you some sort of musical parrot. Sure, you might be able to mimic every note from_____________ (insert name of guitar god of the week here.) but will you sound like yourself? Which at least to me, is what this thread strarted out asking.

Go back to the basics. Sure you know your scales and modes, and chords and progressions. But how many time have you practiced to an Maj 7 to minor 9th riff? Or sat there, doodling to a chord progression of your own choosing? Come on, do you think Brian May, Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, and the other great guitarist developed their unique sounds, riffs, and tones, fromm studying tab?

Sit down, and learn to sound like yourself.
