But if you are NOT looking at making it as some underground, hiphop, rap, hardcore or metal- let's say you want to be reaching the widest audience possible- ok then I'd say leave out the swear words and if you have to say something that could be risque' -say it with grace, eloquence and intelligence. maybe try more of a "Prince" approach and go with something more like 4NIC8-U |

I think there is something to be said about a shocked song that repeats a swear word or over annoying sex statement in such a way like Doing The But or She whore her itsy bitsy Pink Poka dot bikini that makes the artist stick out in such a way that if she or he ever does anything else I'm not sure anyone will even listen to it.
But this is true about other pop novelty songs.
Did you know Don McClean wrote other songs other than By By Miss American Pie ?
The song Don't Worry-Be Happy is not the only song the artist that wrote it did but because it has such a memorable hook it's perhaps the one you will remember best.
So I believe if you wrote a swear word song in such a way that the hook had the swear word and really made everyone laugh I'm sure it might give you a certain repetition that if you wanted to write serious love songs or truth songs I'm not sure any one would take then seriously. |

Why is it that so many people are attacking hardcore/metal/rap/hiphop as underground ignoramuses in this thread?
Has no one paid any attention to what has been said so far? Even cursing can be elloquent!
Has no one ever heard a rapper who doesn't swear?
Does anyone out there listen to KRSONE?
What about Christian Hardcore/Punk? They don't swear and they're certainly not mainstream!
What is with all the stereotyping?

Swearing from time to time makes you a real human being! There ARE intelligent people who swear! They aren't all ignorant! Do you think that George Washington or Thomas Jefferson swore in private? I think so!

Please -I want to clarify that I am NOT by any means considering any genres to be a bunch of igmoramuses! I use LOTS of foul language in my day-to-day amongst friends and loved ones. At work- of course I do NOT- but then again I suppose it would not do a good job of representing my fine employer if I were to say what's REALLY on my mind! Iron Maiden-one of my favorite metal bands- wrote songs from translations of the Egyptian book of the Dead (and by the way- the swear words are most of thimes only in between songs on the live recordings) and thier classic "Ryme of the Ancient Mariner" is a re-working of the Samuel Taylor Cooleridge classic- ie: these guys are FAR from stupid! -Anyhoo- what I am saying is that a lot of these different genres of music do NOT get the "heavy radio attention" that mainstream pop or rock does- so ergo- if it is not going to be played as widely- it would probably be ok to swear your @ss off. As I had mentioned previously- sometimes there just isn't a decent substitute for a swear word. |

I think this is the key insight that people (including myself) overlook when they/we try to be too perfect, too godlike, too ideal:

It's like, "get real". You're a person. It's okay to have an ugly side...
(my fifty cents) |

I guess I feel better when I can listen to what I can control.
Sure I agree that swearing can sell but I doubt I'll buy it.
I guess I prefer songs that are cleaner lyricly but this said I guess I'm not the best example with how I write my songs.
But I must also admit if it is humorous I might also listen to something really violent but I'm trying not to. |

I was listening to some Insane Clown Posse (you know, I don't know how to spell this word...hrm...) and I realized that even though they are pretty damn funny, I can't listen to them too many times. The songs really lose their charm once I've listened to them enough times to anticipate the lines...
As ArtPaul said, sometimes you want to listen to something violent or racy or whatever and sometimes that's good. But I think this kind of music has a limit and does not endure because it quickly loses it's shock-value appeal and fades from favor.
I would not but an ICP album (the tracks I have are on some mix CDs a friend made for me) because I know I wouldn't listen to it more than a handful of times and then let it gather dust on my shelf...
Endurance is the mark of really good music... I think it says something that many songs that feature swear words and even graphic imagery do endure...
And thank you Reconsiderate. Yes, all should be human. Otherwise they're f*cking fake. |

Some of their beats are downright slammin', and worth listening to over and over again in my book. Some of their songs are actually quite conceptual, too. Portraits worthy of meditation.
The 31 words I've typed in the paragraph above amount to my 78 cents. That's the sort of thing I need to mention explicitly. |

Maybe people won't buy it as Walmart (or rather Walmart won't sell it), but there are plenty of artists out there who curse their brains out and plenty of people buy. |

Yes but I think it's a certain type of crowd that buys it and they may still buy it without the swearing but certain people won't buy something if it has too much swearing and that was the point djsmooth4lyfe was making.
That is what you have to decide what kind of audiance do you want.
I like making people laugh but maybe you want to sing serious songs.
I was watching a film on PBS about Bob Dylan and when he came back from England it seems that he and Joan Baez went their ways because although Bob like to write Political songs he didn't want to do that the rest of his life. She was talking about rallys she was going to do and he was not interested but want to just write other types of songs.
Another interesting Book I read once is the auto biography of Lenny Bruce called How To Talk Dirty and Influenced People. In his book Lenny says when his mother had him that wasn't a dirty thing and I believe he is using the F word as he is talking about it.
However I want to perform for whole families not just adults so I kind of want to keep it clean because I love making kids laugh but some of my songs I'm not sure I should have wrote like The Backstreet Boys(I Want To Kill Them) and so I have mixed feeling about this topic but thought it would be fun to talk about.Maybe Ecclesiastes chapter 3 has something to say about this ? You know The Birds sang it: To Everything Turn Turn Turn there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven.Maybe there is a time to swear and a time not to ? |

Good point ArtPaul. And I do recognize that there are groups that won't buy records with too much cursing, but consider these two examples of censorship:
1. The radio version of Creep by Radiohead says, "you're so very special" while the original artist's version is written, "you're so f*cking special". And you can buy copies of both versions. Now Radiohead dosen't curse their head off in every song, but why not just bleep them out on the radio? Why a whole different version?
There is a place to curse and a place not to.
2. Who remembers the song "Lightening Crashes" by Live? What an amazing song (and video and band for that matter)! now who remembers the radio version? The radio version cuts out the second verse that goes, "her placenta falls to the floor" which mirrors with imagery "her intention(s)" falling to the floor. Why was that edited out for radio? It's placenta! Not sh*t or something else dirty -- Like ArtPaul noted, giving birth isn't dirty even if it is the product of f*cking like that guy said.
Why do we censor the miracle of giving birth to original art just because not everyone finds it pleasant at the dinner table...? |
