I went to a Mobile Computing Symposium this morning where there wa a lot of discussion about mobile technologies. It was timely because I have been thinking about where the music industry is going and what other mediums there are for music distribution.

One of the speakers said that it won't be long before iPODS and similar devices will be obsolete. Todays mobile phone can already fulfil pretty much what an iPOD can do plus of course it has communications.

My number one device currently is an iMATE mobile phone which runs on GPRS. I'm told tere will be a true 3G version out by the end of the year which will make 3G look slow. But my device is a Windows Mobile device with touch screen, INternet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Digital Camera etc. I can download ringtones, play music, check my email, run MSN.....................................................................................

I do also have an MP3 player and other devices, but convergence and mobile memory whether inbuilt or flash cards means that I probably will have one or two devices in future that will do everything. My brother doesn't use his CD player any more, he connects his iPOD to his stereo at home, in the car etc. I know CD quality is better so I use both, but I listen to music downloads and especially Podcasts more than I listen to the radio these days.

So where am I heading with this discussion. I'm keen to discuss ideas of music distribution to mobile phones and other devices. From a MF perspective, how can we also capture this market here. Wouldn't it be great if people can sign up to MF, download or stream our music straight to their mobile phones, pay for them where approrpiatre and even participate in the forums. Just a few more ideas for everyone to think about. I'm keen on your thoughts.

Of course though you are a guru in this area...I know you!!

But yeah I have a Sony Ercison that plays MP3s and all - now windows stuff - but great for emails et al...

I have had it for two years - couldnt understand why people were buying ipods when they could buy a phone with it all inside!!

Including camera and video maker player...LOL!!
