|
|
I've got a Boss BR-864 that I haven't put to very good use as of yet. When I bought it, it was a shelf model (there weren't anymore in stock.)
So I was fortunate enought to get a discount (maybe), but they didn't have a users manual.
I didn't mind so much becuase my friend has the same model, and I knew I could count on him to help me out.
Well my problem is not covered in the manual. I like to record with just piano and vocals, and stink as I may, I want to get the best possible sound.
Does anyone have tips on working with this? And can anyone reccomend settings for vocals? |

| I don't know about that model, but I do know that you should probably record the piano on two tracks. Most piano is done in stereo. |

This machine is a handful...I am still learning it. If you press "utility" then cursor over to [EFX] press enter. There you can select your input. I usually use <normal> or <rec dry>. With normal, you will receive whatever effects you have it set on. (I will address that momentarily) If you have it on rec dry, then it will just record whatever is input with no effects (unless you are using something on the front end).
Once you select <normal> hit "exit" twice. Then press "effects." First cursor to the far left to scroll either MIC GTR LIN or SIM. If you choose mic it assigns an effect to the mic (XLR) input. If you choose gtr, guitar and lin, line. SIM actually will show you several sombos for effects on the vocals and the instrument (primarily designed for guitar.)
I would agree to record the piano on two tracks, however unless you have some sort of other device to bring the split channels back to one (mixer) to input into the BR864 this is your only other option: record the piano on track 1. Then press "utility." Then [TRK]. Then [CPY]. Change edit type to: ALL. Then exit out. Select Track 2 and paste the track on T2 so you now have identical tracks on 1 and 2. Now select T1 and hit "pan" scroll to the left. Select T2 hit "pan" and scroll right. Whalaa! Piano in stereo.
When I record vocals I generally find a simple voc effext that I like. Then I select Loop Effects and put some reverb on the top to warm the sound even further. I hope this helps.

| I mostly have this little beast figured out...to some degree. However, I am trying to lay down drum tracks and I am completely ignorant in this arena. I want to be able to just play the rhythm guide with my song and record the drums...but I am not sure it works that way. Anyone that can, please help. |

jflx60d...
The unit doesn't really record the drums, but "plays back" what is assigned to the song. It will be on the Masterd music. Build a "Performance' form preset patterns and/ or created ones. It's time consuming, but "do-able'. I usually string a few together, insert one or two I made, etc.. You'll end up with Song Performance #.... This will come up now when you select that song (from utility) instead of an arrangement defaulting back to the 130BMP
The manual can help, but it reads in "Engrish"... Good luck! |

i have just acquired the BR-864 recently, unfortunately I am horrible at instructions an any format.
i have learned alot "trial by fire", but the ability eludes me on how to save a track and store it elsewhere while i tinker with another track.

It saves automatically. use the utility song to name it, and if you want to start on something else, you can either start a new song, or use the V-tracks (virtual tracks)
Damn, that was a vague answer. I'm sorry. I've been very busy today. If that doesn't help, aske me again on Sunday. |

I know this is off topic man, but I got this Digitech RP2000 and the damn adapter went out. Has anybody got one laying arounf that they could sell me? The model number on the adapter is PS0920-120. They sell the damn thing at Digitech for $50.00 I would like to get one for less. Doubt if that happens though... |

look around your house at some other electronics you might possess
that has an adapter, compare the specs(watts and volts) and see if you have a match. hope this helps. |

hey Greg
thank you for your reply.
i have another inquiry-
do you have to master a song before you can download it
onto a P.C.? does the song have to be named in order to download?
the reason i ask is due to the fact that i want to send an unfinished song
to a my drummer out of state for his input, and i still want the ability
to alter it. i only have the memory card it came with(16 MB), so i dont really have the room to be saving it, for i wouldnt be able to record and save anything else until i have completed the song.
something else, you said to use utility song to save, i can do that now but i am unable to retrieve it at a later date.
Bottom line- this thing is over my head!!
Thank you |

I can't believe this damn thread still gets answered... lol He posted it in July 2004.
Do you even have the Boss anymore Greg? I would think he figured it out by now, at least he has never mentioned it to me |

No you don't, you can transfer it to the PC at anytime. However, if the song file is too large you may not be able to transfer it. In this case, you should either upgrade your memory card, or delete un-needed works on your device.

All Songs have a unique default file name. You do not need to rename it in order to be saved. They are saved automatically. Those cards can hold a lot more than you'd think. However, I recommend upgrading your card, so that you don't run into any problems. They aren't expensive.

Unfortunately, all I can say is you need to spend more time with the manual, or call their support line for technical assistance. If somebody actually walks you through the process once, I'm sure it will be a piece of cake from there on out.
Good luck! |

Hey I have a BR 864 and when I hook it up with USB and run it through an export to WAV (it goes through all the steps, stopping at Idiling, and opens the file folder in my Win XP computer) nothing is in the Roland file except another empty roland file folder. Any help would be great.
Wade
PS I have initialized sys, crd, and all; and still have the same problem |

Did you get the latest version of the software? There's a link. I use a br-532.....Uses the same program. I will addmit it........A LOT of my recording is done on this machine. So if you like the sound of my stuff. It is probably 50-60% recorded on this little beast. I am getting a micro BR soon. Take a look at it. Any musician should have this at their disposal. Looks to be a cool little tool.

Let us know if you get it woking.
Sam
PS doesn't it ask you were to save the file? "Roland"........ Is that what you named the file to save in? |
