Waz up everyone? I think I just found my new home away from home!
I have to admit I was weary of this site when I first checked it out, but I think I'll be a Gold Member soon, as this seems like the real deal!
Anyway, this is my first post and my first (admittedly) time I've ever been lost on the internet: I don't know how to Podcast. I have one particular tune I have in mind to podcast, but I know nothing about it, so I have a few questions:
1. Is it worth podcasting just one song?
2. Why would anyone just randomly listen to my podcast anyway (why podcast?).
3. Most importantly, can someone give me a quick overview of how to podcast?
I appreciate your help and I'm excited to be a part of this community.

Hi Chris,
Welcome to Music Forte.
Glad to see you on the forum.
Here are some answers for you.
1. Yes...Might as well start somewhere.
According to a post from Greg, here is more info on Podcasting
The easiest way to do this is to login to your site, and click on the "Podcast it" link that appears above your playlist.
Copy that URL, and submit it at http://www.feedburner.com
At feedburner, they will create a Universal-type format that every podcasting service and aggregator can read and understand.
They all have some variances to their formats.
Then, take that feedburner URL and post it at all the resources listed from the "Podcast it" page and any other that you know of.
You'll be able to track how many people are subscribing and listening to your podcast.
This is just a basic way to get started. The possibilities go on and on...
End of quote.

Hey Chris, to your question, "Would anyone just randomly listen to my Podcast?" The answer is a definitive maybe!
What you need to do is make your presence known. Get active in the forums; critique other people’s songs, e-mail people whose music you like. In the beginning nobody knows you're here. Just like in the real world you've got to go out and make friends. Nice typing to you. |

Okay I build PC's for a hobby and I AM internet savy...usually...but I don't get it.
When I click on "Podcast it" it takes me to a page (on musicforte.com) that says "The page you are trying to view does not exist".
Am I supposed to copy that url anyway (http://www.musicforte.com/ez.php) and put that in @ feedburner?
I also clicked on the media:rss & the itunes:rss links and they take me to error pages that also include a url (although its HUGE and most of the "error" message goes off the screen)
I guess I'm not really clear: why would I want someone to "podcast" my music instead of just downloading it or listening on my site?
Is there really a difference?
Is it kind of the difference from "blog" and "forum" (which to me are pretty much different sides of the same coin ) |

Hm. These are good questions.
Think I'll jump on the wagon of asking them too, since I myself don't have the answers. |

Hi KatsuCadence,
Your descriptive comments had an ampersand character, which was being rejected. I've temporarily corrected it by changing it to the word "and".
I'll get into the script later, so that the ampersand character won't cause the parse errors.
Anyhow, it works now. Please try it again. |

Okay, so THANK YOU!! It worked! At least I think it did. I just use Win Media Player to listen to music, so I don't have Itunes or anything like that.
Can someone test this for me?
Can someone recommend something that I CAN listen to Podcasts with (since now I'm "in the know" in the podcast hood) OTHER than Itunes (I have huge moral issues with itunes ...and Ipod...and iCars and iFreakin everything). |

Thanks! Much appreciated.
Its not iTunes so much as iEverything in general. I don't like proprietary-ness. In every instance I've seen it just seems like a money making scheme.
People deeply enthrawled in pop-culture like to be able to relate to things (usually from a lack of social capacity). Apple, and other proprietary-driven companys like to exploit this (IMHO) by creating the iPod....then they name their other devices i - this and i-that and what it does to people who don't fully understand the technicalities of the software/hardware/electronics is it ropes them into thinking that Apple (or other companies who do this) are the only ones that make devices that do what theirs do.
By creating hardware that is only compatible with their software, and vice-versa, it tends to make (non-computer literate) people think that something is wrong when they try to play their iTunes song in another player, for example, because it doesn' t work. Its kind of taking advantage of people's ignorance, but selling it to them as a convenience. I just find that immoral.
I think if Apple really wanted to be "convenient" they would explain to people why the iPod is better than, say the equivalent Samsung MP3 player that cost the same (pre-30GB iPod) and held 2GB of songs (when the equally-priced iPod held 1/2 that - this is about 1 year or so ago) and was fully compatible with ALL PC's (even Apple) and didn't require proprietary software to function.
I don't know...I know I sound like a conspiracy theorist and I'm really not that hard-up about it but I just don't support proprietary anything.
Okay I'm done ranting |

Yeah man, I dig where you're coming from. Upstanding philosophers with passion and originality are hard to come by. |

To answer all your questions in a nutt shell, non advanced talk
1. podcasting has its advantages for music talent and or people you are promoting in your area or demographics you live at.
2. When you say 1 song thats not really a podcast thats just a song, you need to do a lineup of music in your podcast and a introduction to each artist you are playing so people know who they are.
3. their is podcast software available i think i seen a posting in the music forte forums about the program i do remember it had a error with something when you installed it to the computer but i belive i sent a FIX for it apart of that forum post so people can download it and install it properly.
4. you must be consistant on your podcast shows, make sure when you release a podcast and if you say its a weekly podcast show make sure you release it every week as expected. also as well dont bite off more then you can chew with the music lineup most podcast shows range from 30 minutes to 2 hours long (from what i have gotten from people) and well they varie in music genres and styles depending on the podcast creator and or genre they are trying to push to the general public.
5. be sure to submit your podcast show direct link (mp3 link) to the show on your webserver or whereever eles to internet radio stations, and websites who deal with online music streaming and content so your show gets plugged to a much wider market.
thats some helpfull tips to advance your podcasting adventure.

Greg, I too, had a prob with the podcast IT link, it comes up as an
error still. So, I don't see how to get started if that's where I have
to start. I have a template for the .xml file to use for my podcast,
and I can download whatever software, but where do I go from
there?? |

Hi,
Yours seemed to come up fine, when I logged in and checked your account.
http://www.musicforte.com/mrss.php?userid=Dlivahh
The best way to use this is to first plug it into feedburner.com. It will create a URL that is accepted by every major podcasting site.
Please feel free to give me a call, so that I can help get you started. |
