See... Here is something that I have been addressing in other posts. When you have a strong following, you only need one place on the Net for someone to buy an album. Just having an album on LuLu, or anywhere else, is not distribution in the true sense of the word.

Distribution involves marketing. Putting albums all over the Net is called placement, and while there is nothing wrong with that, it is not marketing/distribution. It also has limited reach in selling product.

That is where I think we all get confused as independents. Many of us are not trained in marketing, but more to the point, it takes money to market a product effectively. There is a remedy to that, it is called a collective. What a collective means is the same meaning as the term co-op. Many people from the Mid-West who farm are in co-ops. This is where they share things like farm equipment and so on, they share the burden of raising multiple crops between different farms. They also share in the profits from this effort.

As independent musicians, we are usually riding on limited resources. What we can do though is share these limited resources and create power, like a co-op. How this would work is that collectively we share time, and small amounts of money, to purchase tools we can use together to get our work in front of the right faces.

Let me give you a hypothetical example in real world collective power.

Let us say that 20 of us got together and decided this co-op was a good idea. All of us have different goals, but each of us are united on the idea of getting our music more exposure, and eventually make more money doing what we love.

So, 20 of us put in $20.00. That's $400 dollars. It doesn't seem like a lot, but with that we can buy a years membership to http://taxi.com and use that tool to contact the right people. This is just one example, there are other things we can do, if we put 20 more bucks in we have 400 more to do any number of cool things. That is only 20 people!

Now think if you had a 1000 in this group. Now we have $20,000 to invest, and it is only costing us 20 dollars each time we do a new thing.

There is more to this than what I am describing, but I hope that some of you see where I am coming from here.

What is missing in this Internet Independent Musician game is simply teamwork. Everyone is going off in the direction they think is working, and none of it is working the way we want it to. The fact that we are independent simply means that we are not signed by a label, it should not mean that we cannot get together and create a powerful medium to make our music sell, or whatever your particular goal is. Like I often say, I am not necessarily addressing the hobbyist. But if you want want I think you want, then you might consider the idea of a collective over just beating the bushes by yourself.

for the moment we r sicks of individualism....and we have hard head for understand it.....
