Yamaha S80 Digital Piano

Hi, all. For years I had a major aversion to digital pianos and keyboards. I was a piano purist, and couldn't bring myself to play an instrument that didn't sound anything like a piano! Well, friends, there ~*is*~ a god, because Yamaha makes a digital piano that sounds so utterly real, they've made a convert out of me!

I play the Yamaha S80 (they make an S90 now, too) and I love it!! The piano sounds alone are the reason I've chosen this particular keyboard. It also does all sorts of fancy things that I have no use for, but it's still good to know they're there. Wink

You can hear the Yamaha S80 in all its glory on this recording. It's a nine minute impromptu composition for solo piano I call "Imagine Infinity."

Hi Christine,

That sounds great! Yamaha does an excellent job of replicating an authentic piano sound. Before I finished College and took off to Japan, I worked for Yamaha Piano Sales. We sold a lot of digital pianos and Clavinovas.

I loved that job, because I had so much opportunity to play. Smile

Now I have a P-60. It's great. It has the weighted keys and very realistic sound. Plus I can take it on the road.

I love your piano solo!

Thank you! I'm so glad you liked the song. It's called "Imagine Infinity." If you believe in me, would you like to vote for me in the Music Forte "Idol" contest? I'm one vote away from first place right now, and it would mean so much to me!

Either way, I would like to invite you to visit my website. If you like the music, you can sign up for my mailing list, order my CD, or join my Army of Dreamers forum. I would love to have you around!

I think it's great that you like the Yamahas as much as I do. Have you ever found anything better, as far as digital pianos go? If anyone has, I want to hear about it. From what I've seen and heard, Yamaha has the most authentic digital sound out there. Sure, it's not a real piano, but it never goes out of tune, so it actually helps my singing voice. And as far as keyboards go, the action is terrific!!

I had a Kurzweil a few years ago, because Beth Hart recommended it to me, but it was stolen and I didn't have anything to play for almost a year. It just about killed me, and that's no exaggeration. Anyway, Brian Lewis, who's a talent buyer here in Los Angeles, hired me to open for a national headliner, and he came to the show to watch me play. After he heard me, he approached me about working together, and I told him, well, there's just one thing... I don't have a piano to play. Hahahaha! You should have seen the look on his face! Long story short, he talked a Dutch rock band he worked with into letting him borrow their keyboardist's Yamaha S80 so I could make a live demo... and that was Live Summer Session 2005. All the songs you hear on my website were recorded on that borrowed Yamaha S80, after I hadn't practiced, literally, for over a year!

Just try to imagine for a moment how much music had built up inside me after a year of not being able to let it out on a piano! It was gnarly. At first I totally balked at the idea of playing a keyboard and not a piano, but when I touched it and felt the action, and I heard the tinkling sound through headphones, I realized that I was playing on a solid gold instrument. I was so lost in the music, new songs were flowing forth one after the other, and the piano sounded so real, I forgot I wasn't playing on a real piano. I just closed my eyes and imagined I was playing a concert grand!

When Live Summer Session 2005 ended up getting so much attention, and CDs started selling in pretty significant numbers on my website, I bought my own Yamaha S80 from a famous jazz cat named Gregg Karukas. He was selling his because he had upgraded to the S90, so just go ahead and picture this piano... all 88 keys, big travel case, in perfect mint condition! The first night I just tested it out, but I knew right away that this was the piano I wanted. I told Gregg that I would come back to pay him in full within 24 hours, and I gave him my website address and asked him to please hold onto the keyboard for me until the next day.

Well, when I showed up the following evening, Gregg told me that he had visited my website and that he really was impressed by my songwriting, piano playing and voice. He said that it was "pretty damn good" for being recorded live a single take, and he asked me if I would mind playing for him on the piano in his living room. He's sponsored by Yamaha, so he has this gorgeous grand piano in his living room. I sat down, played a few songs, and the next thing I know, Gregg is leading me outside, down this winding pathway, and into the studio of my dreams!!!!!! He asked me to play for him on the piano in there, and this time he recorded me. He played it back, and it sounded larger than life. It all was so exciting!!! And then he said he wanted to work with me............. so I am getting ready to go to Nightowl Studios in November (that's a month away!) to record an official debut studio album... on his Yamaha grand piano!

Clearly, I'm a big fan of Yamaha! If it wasn't for that Dutch band lending Brian their S80 for me to play, would we have ever searched Ebay and Craig's List for a "Yamaha S80"? Would we ever have met Gregg Karukas? Hmmm!

So hats off to Yamaha! It's so great to be playing on an instrument you truly LOVE!

Very Happy Hey christine
U sound as beautiful as ever.
Ive never been much of an improptu fan But u show an excellent range of talent in those on ur site. I wonder if jus b4 u played imagine infinity ud been watchin gerlims coz i notice the theme tune snuck in @ about 4:40. lol. Nice harmonic rift that.

And congrates on ur sinking that studio rec time. Good-on-yer.
It will b a heap of fun and good luck but of course you wont need it.

As to keyboards Yam r 1 of the best for authentic sounding acostic instruments. But all the other major players can do excellent acoustic rendering now. Certainly when cost is inculded as with most instruments Yam make, including real acoustic instruments but exculdin synths which i personally find r a bit poor. They do cum out on top.

So it seems to me that the most important point is how u personnally feel with it.
(i like semi-weight keys but of course i rarely play in a classical pianofotre manner.)
And this is because it has become pretty easy to get high quality acostic sounds simplely by sampling an oringinal insturment into a sampler or very accuarte synth modelling in effect making the keyboard sounds identical to a piano.
So its jus down 2 ur personal favo to replace a piano whislt touring about, which after all is wot u want. Dispenseing with the problem that ever time a piano is moved it must b re-tunned

the most imporant fing i find is how u feel with it.
Luv

Hi Krusty,

I am laughing right now because you have such a GOOD ear!! I watched Gremlins when I was a little tiny girl and I haven't seen it since. But with the connection I have always shared with music, I would not be surprised if it has haunted me.

Wow! You also have a lot of Music Forte Dollars! May I inquire whether or not you will VOTE for me in this Music Forte "Idol" competition? I really hope you do. It would mean so much!! And please take a look around my website. If you see something you like in the boutique, let me know. I would be glad to work out a trade with you! Smile
