|
|
Greeting people!
The other day, my friend and I were kicking back, smoking a cig or three, and listening to some tunes. Up from the depths of my hard drive came "Adventure In A Yorkshire Landscape" from the live Be Bop Deluxe lp, "Live In The Airage" He dropped his cig, and stared at me. "So, THAT'S where you get it from!" he exclaimed. My typical reply was "huh?"
and he went on to tell me that Bill Nelson, who is my idol by the way, flavors a lot of what I do on guitar when I just kick back and play. Not when I write mind you, but when it's just me, playing around and "doodling" on the guitar. So, I listened, and damn if he wasn't right!
So, who inspires you on your instrument? Is it a conscience thing?, or completely unconscience? Mine personally is unconscience, since I've never tried to sound or play like Bill Nelson.
How about you? |

| I really don`t try to sound like anyone else, fact is I deliberatly steer away from it, and try to have the most original vibe I can possibly have...but the fact remains, there are so many artists out there, that virtualy everyone sounds like sombody else. A few weeks ago a guy came over just to hang out, and asked me when I had changed my name...of course I just figured the guy was stoned, but he handed me this c.d., and asked me to play it. A few of the songs on it were like listening to a mirror image band, of work I had done with Gerry Moss, (an Arkansas blues great)...had his voice nailed, and the music arangements sounded eerily similar to my own. Really cool stuff, come to find out the name of the band is Groove Armada. And I`m assuming that it`s a remix of sorts, the name of the c.d. is "Goodbye Country, Hello Nightclub"...Anywho; I play alot of different instuments, and genres. I guess my main 3 would be keyboard, bass, and guitar though. And if I were choosing to sound like sombody else...on keys it would be Tori Amos, bass would be whoever plays bass for Yes, and guitar would be a combination of Beck, Steve Vai, and Randy Rhodes. Of course that`s not the only instruments I play, but I don`t know anyone who plays cello, or violin...that`s just somthing I picked up because it gave my music an aluring vibe, especially when I throw in some cello on a hard rock track...I just don`t want to sound like Manudo...peace out...Drop The Sun |

Yes, Reconsiderate, we agree, you're a TOOL, (hahahahahaaaaaa) but seriously.....
Guitar? Ace Frehley (who actually lives near me, somewhere....) because he made you WANT to play, Steve Vai, because he did it so well, and Joe Satriani, because he made you want to clean up when doing so.
Other than that, I do it for the beer and the bitches, just like most other wankers. |

| I have been told that I have a similar vocal sound to that of Jim Morrison. It's hard to be objective about it when I listen to my own stuff. I don't try to sound or be like anyone other than the person God intended me to be. Took me alot of years to realize what music was really intended and created for.. Chasing money or selling cd's or some elusive celebrity or mega-star status is just the illusion that this fallen world still chases after but does not recognize. When you replace the "me's" and the "I's" in your quest for "your" music, only then will you understand that music is a gift from God, given to you so that you can give it back to him. Think about that the next time you sit down and write a song.. You may be very surprised |

Well, I have to agree- somewhat with Mobilehomeboy- ONLY in the Ace Frehley section. I guess I was about 8-9 years old when I put down a comic book and first saw KISS on tv and said "living breathing superheroes!" at this time I was taking piano lessons (forced) and hated it- so I started kicking around on my dad's little folk guitar because I wanted to be like Ace. HOWEVER- I have to say that as I grew and my playing progressed that I noticed that Ace had..well.. NOT progressed much. Then I heard Jeff Beck, this obviously changed my perspective on guitar and what can be done with it! Now my inspirations are the Mozart and Bach that I grew up with from piano- but also Satriani, Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Carlos Santana, Queen.. I could go on and on- the BEST thing I would say is to give a listen to some of my songs like "Beethoven's Bane" or "Dancing On The Edge" or "The Longing"- these will give you- the listener an idea of where my influences are.
But bottom line- I thank God for the ability to do this..and for each and every listener! I don't do this for the beer- sobered up- I don't do it for the women..already taken.. I do this because every breath of my soul tells me I HAVE TO. -GregK. |

I don't really know why I do it, the beer and bitches are just usually what pop up around the playing.
Don't believe in God, so that's out..... besides, religion is full of rules, which also don't agree with my personality type.
I'll stick with the beer and other assorted substances, worked for Ozzy!
But, whatever makes YOU happy, works for me as well. Happiness is what it's all about.
And that, mis amigos, is:
THA WORD!

Sir Paul McCartney! I flip every time I see a violin bass, such as last Tuesday when I saw the Spinto Band support the Kooks The Spinto Band's bassist has a violin bass, so I had to compliment him on that fact
Other people that inspired me... ehm Bob Hardy (Franz Ferdinand) and James 'Stel' Stelfox (Starsailor) Then there is my dad, who used to play bass when he was in his 20's but is now playing guitar.
John Entwistle is also a 'hero' of mine, even though watching him hardly inspires me but instead almost discourages me by his incredibly crazy mad skills
In fact, I used to play the drums (inspired by Ringo!) when I was 13-15 years. I had lessons for 2 years but the teacher was such a terrible **** that after 2 years I sold my drumkit
A year ago I decided to try my dad's guitar. I could play a bunch of songs that I liked after some months, but I had trouble with keeping rhythm and I didn't feel comfortable with a guitar.
So then I saw my dad's bass standing there and decided to try it out. And that did feel good! I got a pile of bass books from the library and according to my dad, I became better by the day Now I'm playing in a band, but we only play (not so interesting) covers and we're gonna split up in a few weeks time so I'll have to go out and find myself a new band soon.
When you think about it, different 'characters' play different instruments. Bassists are often a bit in the background even though they're often (co) songwriters. I don't like to be in the middle of attention, so in that sense I fit right in the bass 'profile'
Right, that's a lot of babbling |

| Billy Joel and Elton John kept me motivated all throughtout my High School years. In college I turned to Dave Grusin (I liked his commercial approach. He did a lot of great TV and Movie Soundtracks) and Monty Alexander. |

Emmi, I completely understand the being in the background remark! Plated bass for many many moons, and always hung to the left of the stage, and was rarely noticed. Switched to guitar seriously about 7 years aga, and for the first 4 wqas, yep, hanging to the left of the stage again. Now it's differenty, since I found my little guitar "niche", and will actually allow myself to been seen and heard! |
