Hey! Very Happy

You and me are pals, and so I want to do things for you selflessly & generously. And how can I do that? Well, as a musician, I make songs for you of course!

I've got a nice little stack of sheet music that I cover on my computer. I do it all up with synthesizers and what have you... and I've just uploaded a few! (Music Forte link in my sig) One song in particular is a classic jazz song that you might like. Linus & Lucy from the Charlie Brown cartoon!

Yes! (I have yet to meet a person who isn't overjoyed upon hearing this.)

Enjoy, buddy! Very Happy

RE: Vince Guaraldi

I always loved his music, Reconsiderate! I can close my eyes and picture the little Peanuts kids skating around on the ice rink, and Charlie Brown's poor little Christmas tree that wilted under the weight of a single little bulb. Poor Charlie Brown. LoLoLoL.

Thanks for putting up the song!!! Maybe someone'll talk me into playing it live one day........ hmmm!!!! Very Happy

I admire Vince Guaraldi immensely.
i still have, buried in my piles of sheet music, a simplified songbook of peanuts songs including "Linus and Lucy" , "Skating" , "Failure Face" , and "Bus-Wheel Blues" - I really got my first taste of the #9 and 13th dominant chords from "Bus-Wheel Blues".
Just last week I borrowed the a peanuts songbook from the library - I't's great! - I just gotta keep remembering to renew it so the library police don't come down on me.

You guys REALLY use that stuff? I had that crap crammed down my throat for 8 years, while earning my National and State winner certificates for classical piano. (Piano Guild, you know the drill...)

Yuk.

Maybe I'll be featured ON some sheet music some day, but as far as that whole thing went, well, you know. Didn't help me write songs at all........ Just to play what other people wrote.

Which is cool if you want to be a cover "artist".

But I'd rather forge new shizola than to have to conform to the relentless technical, theoretical, and metronomic confines of another's creation.

Word?

Word.....

OK - - ??? (please mods, start a new discussion with this post)
who says playing and studying other's music in sheet music form or any other form for that matter makes you more confined?
Just the opposite is true.
I just visited your MF page.
You sound incredibly original - - ???
all 7 masterworks you have there are in a nice square 4/4 time with the exception of "What do you want?" which has some 5/4 bars in specific places.
you are ok at what you do but please consider the possibilities:
if you want to truly "forge new shizola" and break away from those "technical, theoretical, and metronomic confines" that you are in, study those that are forging the way - stand on the shoulders of giants!
Woodshedding is a good thing, whether it is with recordings, sheet music, transcriptions, shenkerian analysis, whatever you can do
-I'm not saying don't experiment and discover for yourself......
...I love when I say to myself "What if?" and forge away.

....getting back to Vince Guaraldi,

looking at his music, he certainly had a uniqueness and dared to break some rules (7th clashes and 3rds against 11th), usually with his crushes and other ornamentation. he captured some pretty cool moods.
he really enhanced the peanuts cartoon specials big time!!

The reason I do write 4/4, straight time stuff is just that. It's NOT technical, the sheer beauty of all this IS the simplicity.

That's the essence of the "Mobile Home Boy" project: simplicity. Minimalism, almost.

Sure, I can wank huge solos and have every "Dream Theatre" song down pat. But that's just the point. The point is keeping the time, the point is in the TIGHTNESS, the simple elegance and beauty of melody and function, it's not in the shredding. Shred died in the 80's.

I'm trying to create that new sound, and it's not "commercial" because it DOESN'T sound like everything that's on the radio. I'm also slowly becoming masterful at the functionality of the song, and how they can become "catchy". It just works for me that way.

And I'm not gonna sit here and LIE about it, hell, I WANT to sell out, lol. Why WOULDN'T I want to be the best I can be, right?

That being said, you're right. Maybe I should go ahead and experiment with some prog-sounding stuff in the mix. Couldn't hurt, right?

But on the other end of the stick, I don't want to be another Joe Satriani, or Yngwie Malmsteen, because there already ARE them in existence. And those guys play to musicians, not the regular guy.

They are more "Caviar and Champagne" where I'm more "Beer and Chili-cheese Fries".

Maybe I should've put a touch more thought into the previous post... just trying to explain that all the sheet music in the world DID help me technically, but artistically, I think it started to limit me to that world of must-shred vs. must-be-melodic and harmonious.

And, it was just my opinion.

Hope that more-well explains the comment.

And as far as Vince goes, I liked his stuff. He was the John Petrucci of his day. Very riffy.

But I still wish Charlie Brown woulda smacked Lucy one for pulling the ball away..........
