I am SURE that earlier we had a post about awful moments in music history- so NOW I decided to ask the question as to live shows- not so much THE WORST- but if you could say write something to an artist or band you've seen live and you wanna tell them their live show is bad- well..you get the hint.

Ok- I'd have to say to my guitar heroes Satriani and Petrucci- guys..I love your work.. as a guitarist it is mind boggling the stuff you guys are playing..BUT.. LIVE- I might as well be watching grass grow- I KNOW this music is intricate..but c'mon..I shelled out my hard earned dough to see you guys- the LEAST you can do is move around on stage and acknowledge the audience is even THERE!! Go watch Vai's shows or Yngwie's shows- they'll give you some tips on moving around and making it LOOK cool.

Ok- so that's one of my little live-show-duds.. anybody have a few they'd like to throw out there??

then of course there are the people who are very entertaining, but have about zero in the way of content. if i had to choose, i'm going with the one who's got something to say, but isn't all glittery and pretty.

Good point. Old U2 live videos are a good example of that.

Their new almost overdone production during recent concerts sometimes

detracts from their messages, and other times it accentuates or even

improves those messages...

And new video of them with Greenday singing about Katrina victims REALLY, REALLY, blows. Good message -bad production.

Studio version:

(Kindy corny, good message however)

Live version:

(Kindy corny, but again, good message)

Both, gotta have both in the end.

Well, lately I have been thinking- especially in respects to my own (very limited) live appearances- I would rather take the importance of and/or message of the music WAY over the gimmicks ANY day! When I think about SOME of the great shows I have seen- sans gimmicks- let me explain a bit. Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, Yngwie Malmsteen (the only gimmicks really being a little smoke machine, the way he dresses and just all out attitude!) Vai (ok- his guitar lights up, he wears some odd gear now and then and he has a bigass fan blowing in his face..)
Think about it- if Clapton wore platform boots and blew up half his stage- would it somehow debase the beauty, the grace, the overall meaning "deep down" of his songs? - and in reverse, if KISS does a show without all the gimmicks and costumes etc- somehow it just doesn't seem the same? Hmmm. Confused
If Clapton did "wonderful tonight" -but was dressed like Gene Simmons when he did it.. suddenly the words "darling, you look wonderful tonight" might take on a totally different meaning!
