Amen. You can have a house full of gear (or a DAW full of VSTs), if you don't know anything about your collection, if you don't take the time to get to know it you will miss out and you will be disappointed. Sure, there are differences in quality in hard- and software but they're often not as grave as some reviews may appear them to be. Even if something may not be to my liking (after I spend maybe a good chunk of change on it) I can often tweak it and tune it to make it better. As MHB said, practice helps. Just my €0.02. |

I am writing electronica with a cinematic impact so my setup is geared toward trance/symphonic/ambient sounds. Here's a list of the VSTs I use (all through Ableton Live 6 running on an HP DualCore laptop):
Symphonic:
Quantum Leap Symphonic Orchestra Silver XP
Analogue Synths:
MTron (GForce)
impOSCar (GForce)
Operator (Ableton)
Korg Legacy Collection (Korg)
Bass Synth:
Phoscyon (d16 group, TB-303 emulator)
Beast (reFX)
Trance Synths:
Vanguard (reFX)
ReZ 2.0 (Freeware)
Superwave P8 (Freeware)
Ambient Synths:
ProtoPlasm (H.G. Fortune)
STS-26 Pro (H.G. Fortune)
Albino 3 (Rob Papen)
Motion (Ugo, Freeware)
Beat:
MicroTonic (Sonic Charge)
Jamstix (Rayzoon)
Misc:
Plucked String (physically modeled string synth)
Effects:
CamelSpace (Camel Audio)
CamelPhat (Camel Audio)
Mastering
Ozone (Izotope)
Kjaerhus Audio Classic Series
Besides that I use many of Live's built in tools as well as some of trackteamaudio's custom built Live effects (www.trackteamaudio.com).
My motto is try before buy. If I can't download a demo version first I won't touch it. Free is even better. And if the patches aren't to my liking but I think the synth sounds good I try to learn about it and write my own patches. And if the patches are good but the sound is a little thin I route it through Live's CompressorII and the 8 band EQ. If that doesn't help I take it off the hard drive again. I also keep the 20/80 rule in mind to restrain myself from spending too much on soft-synth: you use 20 percent of your gear 80 percent of the time. If something sounds great and works great the next question is will I use it frequently enough to justify the expense? |

See even me pops knows about Reason...I turned him on to it fully a few weeks back and as you can see it's good s@^t......And he real finicky about his sounds ......My pops is Forbidden Dreams, for those not in the know, and he will prolly say something to me about this post ...heheBut he is right, so far in all the software I have played with Reason has to be the best hands down, for creating with midi and stuff....And he has played with A LOT of software, a lot more than I, so he would know better than I..... |
