I haven't made a dime off of my music in soooooo long, that I dreamed a re-run about it. (Wah wah wah waaaaaaaaaaaah (muted trumpet)).

But on the other hand, it doesn't matter, because I DO it because I love it, in a sense it's just what I do.

Too bad Nike never picked up on THAT instead of "JUST DO IT".

Seems like I'm always a day late and a dollar short with some of these....

Here ya go Greg:

"Music Forte, It's what we DO".

There's your slogan, homie!

You're welcome.

It's true. The business has changed. What with risk models, and business being SCARED to take risks these days (I've never seen an executive with a set of brass ones, anyway. No balls, all talk, etc., etc.,) you won't even find "developmental" deals around.

Yes, there used to be a day when talent and work ethic could land you a long-term contract with a label, in which they invested in you and vice-versa, but those days ended approximately 12 years ago. Now, record labels are run by guys with no vision, no integrity, and no BALLS.

Very Happy

Yes, I believe you pretty much nailed it MHB...
...these big labels these days pretty much just want to make us into a bunch of sponge BoBs - put us in their square pants -lining the shelves - all the same - when you pull our strings you get that same recording
-squeeze us dry just to line their pockets.

I think for a long time it has been coming to this.
An incredible musician friend of mine who was a member of a progressive jazz band in the late '70s has told me that his band at that time was all set to have an album release with a major record label and the financial costs (he said about $80K) were completely covered by the label -he says at the last possible moment they chose not to release the album and decided it was too experimental and ahead of it's time.
This major label probably just wrote it off.

-it all comes down to the bottom line- -$$$-
He was a bit distraught - all that time and energy but chalked it up as a "learning experience"

We ARE in the right place,
Good to be here with you all,
Bret

P.S. - here's something to think about:

-way back when, the inventor of the electric TV was convinced by an appearance on TV as recognition for his invention and $50 and a carton of cigarettes, that his patent could rightly be picked up by rca.

One of the most influential inventions of our time - and i really can't remember what the inventor's name is - can you?

that's one answer
i googled your answer
the name i was trying to recall is Philo. T. Farnsworth
-i was mistaken - it was $80 (not $50) and a carton of cigarettes

it is actually a big convoluted mess as to who invented the electronic TV.
here is the long-winded version:

But, if you think about it, it's the same thing with the radio AND electricity. You know, the whole TESLA, what'shisname debate. Considering one claimed to have invented the other before electricity was invented and all. Kinda like the whole electric guitar in SWING music thing, lol. Brian Setzer indeed.....

Personally, I don't care as long as the TV has something good on, the electricity runs well enough to keep the beer in the fridge cold, and since the only radio I listen to is SIRIUS satellite radio, STERN could have invented it as far as I know.

Go Howard!

I was citing an example of exploits through deception.
I'm certain there were many, are many , and will be many more.

In general, I'm just suggesting that when the "atmosphere" is filled with confusion and convolution, that's a sure sign to steer clear.

Agreed. Anyone with ANY greatness in them is always seen as "a little off". And THAT story also parallels some of mine. But, as far as business goes, that's the way UNTALENTED, corporate a**-jockey people DO business, (especially when it comes to the design / implementation for multi-terrabyte data warehouses, and the corrolating systems involved in the mix, but THAT'S a different time and place.... where's my beer? lol)

Those who can't DO, and all.

But, if ya have to drink to deal with depression, (which is better than the alternative: ANTI-DEPRESSANTS), he could've at LEAST made it a Bud Light, lol.

And THAT, my friends, is:

THE WORD

I play in the band RIOTTEAM out of San Diego California.

Our goal is to beat the industry by doing everything ourselves as it is we all go to college. It would be nice to try to avoid signing to any major record label just because there are too many ties and ends meet having to be met. The artist is fully capable of doing everything themselves, it takes a long time too. I'm not too sure if signing is such a bad idea, or was, but knowing the marketing schemes and business approach of most record labels they're pretty shady. True they do hook you up with everything, but it's all fake in a way, cause you gotta pay them back, unless you're The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Red Hot Chili Peppers it's hard for a band to work out. So our idea is to build a really huge fan base first all by ourselves. Start our own business and such, and we'll be truelly independent.

Sad Wow man I had no idea it was still this bad. I'm going to date myself, by saying that I remember How Terri Knight ripped off Grand Funk Railroad for millions. Those guys Back in the day were # 1 and blew Zepplin off the stage. They were being paid 350 dollars a week, and Knight was investing the rest in dry oil wells. I would have thought the business would be more "Professional" by now. Heck you may as well stand on the street corner at 3am and get shot in a drive by. I've been at it for 30 years man, guess now I'm too freekin old. But my music is good. But alas it's all about the money!
Why doesn't somebody of integrity start their own company, and us indies can rule. It's the MUSIC stupid!!!!
