Don't swear in music because I will NOT buy it.
It's usually the rap music!
I buy the music. I don't sing it. Don't swear or cuss!

Its ok to use it a few times to express feelings, but i hate when people use it like every 10 seconds or too many times....then thats when the song gets annoying

Sometimes its funny, but too much is not good

swearing is definitely worse this generation then the last....thats Y I like 90's music way better then today's hits

Its up to the artists
But music like that should not be directed at kids.
Kids imitate and learn from their environment.

Lot of the music from the rap and reggae artists are about their or their friends experiences and the reality is that we all swear so if we are to be real in our lyrics then the swearing has to be in there (im not saying you have to love but its reality) what i dont agree with is the bigging up of this in the music as well as bigging up the gun and the badness, we must realise the power we have as musicians and the fact youths try to live what they hear, so when we write we should keep this in mind

There was a similar post to this before that had about 50 replies. But I don't think I ever through in my two cents.

I think it depends on the context in which the word is being used.

Sometimes a song makes a stronger point by using an aggressive word.

But as stated above, when it's overused, it looses it's effect.

I think swear words need to be used cautiously. But I wouldn't object to a song because it contained one.

And there are times that they can be used with humor. Take Ben Fold's, "Song for the dumped". That's just a goofy song, and it wouldn't have the same effect if he said "ovulating female dog".

I don't think thagt it really matters. I have written songs and I swear in some of them. It really is a matter of "is what you say, expression a mood or feeling"? Some do take it too far, Eminem for example has even said that he needs to swear in his raps to sell records. For some artisits, that is part of the edgy appeal, a marketing sytrategy to entice a certain demographic to interact and retain a certain emotion and mood.

Just some thoughts.
Good Luck

I think it's fine at the right time and place. I cuss like a Marine (which I was), a truck driver (that too), and a biker... Yup.

If you want high end commercial quality mainstream exposure, it is best not too. It restricts the audience, the best audience actually, which is prepubescent teens. I think it just depends on your goals musically.

But I do like my cussing Wink

Different strokes for different folks, Sugar.

I never said I condone it, just said there is a time and a place for everything. If you listen to my show, I make darn sure that your youngest Nephew could listen and not be in any way polluted. http://yourockblock.com It is an "All Ages" show and is meant to be that way. I prefer it, considering I am an ordained minister of the Christian Humanist Church. But I am a realist, and people do talk like that.

I don't buy that "junk" either. And I talk differently around "the boys" than I do my Grandmother, for instance. Very Happy
