Is there a program or something to tell me what note the vocals are in. Or an easier way to sync the vocals to chords, or do I just have to do it by sound? (trial and error)

If you listen to our podcast of Ralph Buckley, they talk about software that does that vocal correction. I forget what it is called, but you can find the podcast at:

If that's not what you're talking about, I know that there is also plenty of software that translates vocal melodies into midi notes.

Any help out there?

I'd say check out a vocoder. It takes 2 instruments and synchs up their textures and notes. So, you can feed your voice into one port and some keyboard/synth through another. Then your voice will synch up perfectly, though it'll sound like a robot a bit.

I just learned how to use mine (which is a piece of Reason 3.0), and I'm really liking it. I'm sure the next 700,000 songs I write will make use of it.

if you are running a recording program that uses vst's you can find one called autotune, personally i think it's the cheap way to do vocals, and it just makes it sound kinda fake but it does what you are looking for i do believe

First of all... This guy asked this question like... uhhhh Last year.

He wanted to know if there was a way to tell what key the vocals are in relating to the chords of a song. Whatever. He asked it in Aug of 2007 and hasn't bothered to come back since. I guess he found his answer somewhere else, or he got smart and got the hell out of this business. Either way, he is gone.

And the product you guys are referring to is made by Antares and it's called Auto-Tune. They have another one that is way older made by Yamaha. A vocoder? Come on.

Can't you guys come up with some more topics that are current? Like... Did you know that Last.fm now has a royalty program for Indie airplay on their radio station? Did you know that? I am remiss to say whether it will be worth anything, but it is a nice gesture.

There are other things going on in music that are interesting. Did you know that if I hear the name Radiohead one more time I think I might explode? Did you know that?
