I think people need to understand the difference between spam and what it really is. I mean there is real spam like 'win a free iphone...' and what not, but if a band is telling you to check them out, its selfpromotion like a commercial on tv, you may not like it but if television allows it then why do ppl get so pissed about it on the net? like it affects them if someone is trying to get their music heard. take myspace for example, a site mostly made up for bands so they can get their music heard. your not gonna get it heard just by making a profile you gotta leave comments on other bands pages so that group of people will see you and have the option to check you out, but ppl still bitch that your "spamming", only by leaving one comment that says Hey check us out... or w/e. Until the day the band on which i have posted a comment on tells me not to leave comments, its all fair game. As a musician you should be wanting to help out other musicians, they're in the game just like you and they're not gonna get anywhere just by sitting there doing nothing.

Hi Dirk,
You have some interesting points here and I'd like to hear some more opinions from other members.

First of all, Myspace was not built for bands. I believe they had close to 100 million members before they even introduced the Myspace music area for bands to create profiles...someone correct me if I'm wrong there.
And I don't believe the owners of Myspace had a genuine care at all for independent artists in doing so.

My views on friend comments are this: My Music Forte member page is my storefront, just as if I had an offline store at the Mall. If someone wants to spraypaint a message about their own business on my window without asking me, I'm not too keen on that....and I often remove that. If they want to say something nice about my music or friendship I take that as a compliment, support that, and often do the same for them.

The fact that I add someone as a friend who requested so has its own weight in the fact that when people look at my storefront and see who my friends are they come across their profiles in that more appropriate manner.

This is my opinion, any thoughts?

I have a few thoughts. Wink

Forums, aka Discussion boards, are intended for discussion. If this was a classified ad site, it wouldn't bother me.

But the whole idea is to engage people, start a topic and discuss. If any kind of material is presented in the forum that doesn't really provide room for discussion or replies, then it devalues the sense of community.

Let's talk and learn, and keep ads for classified ad sites.

Okay, this is a huge area of concern to me. Rolling Eyes (here we go again.....)

First off Dirk281, When you leave an advertisement for yourself, do you give the people whos site your cluttering with adds any feedback? Or, even a listen through their songs? (If you actually do, I praise you for doing it. If you don't, what business do you have posting anything on "Their" site?) This is my biggest problem with the way things are done by "indie" ( Shocked wanna be Shocked )(That includes me so don't take offence.) musicians on the internet. (Dirk281, please don't take offence, I'm not attacking you. You may be one of the few...... Who am I to say?)

If you are going to post stuff on other peoples pages, you really ought to give them something back.........

For example: Hey I check out your song "song title here". I really liked the chorus/first verse/DRUMS!!!! (sorry had to throw that out....) Good job! If your interested come check out our stuff...... Come to our show...... blah blah blah.

If that is the sort of comment being posted, I will usually leave it up. If it is just about them........ FILE 13!!!!

That being said, sometimes if someone has done me a favor or something, I may leave up a "AD" for them. It all really depends.

Most times I will let those go until they get on my nerves or....... I go see that they have some " Evil or Very Mad BOT Evil or Very Mad " program spamming everyone on their friend list. Then if it's not someone that I have any type of conection too (or rather respect for.....)......... FILE 13 for the "so called" friendship too.

We are all doing the same thing out here on the net......... Trying to get heard! I sometimes feel like it is all "preaching to the choir" so to speek. I want people to listen to me. You want me to listen to you. I am a lot more likely to go check out someones tunes if I know that they gave me a personnal comment not just some stupid...... THANKS FOR THE ADD?????? It's all kind of "Payback" for me.

There is also a huge difference between TV adds and cluttering up someones page on the internet. If you were paying me to put an add on my site, everything's different. That is how TV works,....... Adds pay for programming that keeps people around to watch more adds....... NOT MY INTERNET SITE. Wow wouldn't that be cool though?........ hmmmmmmmm?

ANYONE WANT TO PLACE AN ADD ON MY SITE (apply here $5.00 a month) Of course I'm kidding Wink Wink Wink Greg/Reconsiderate/Mr Rose/etc etc............ hmmmm Think interesting idea though.......... Laughing

Oh yeah, and in my opinion...... Myspace is just a huge advertisement already. And if that wasn't bad enough, probably half of the friend requests I get are from people saying "I have moved my profile to "Insert porn name here" cause myspace won't allow........... blah blah blah......... I can't believe that a web site would even allow it's members to only post, "Hey, go somewhere else for my stuff." If myspace was smart they would start deleting those profiles. I don't know exactly what happens but, I always mark those as spam and hope that they actually do something about it. (probably not but, I can hope)

WOW, you have struck a nerve or something.......... Sorry to go off.

Again, Dirk, please don't take offence. I am only responding "MY OWN" point of view, I could be wrong?????????

Later

Sam

Yea you all make good points, and i wasnt totally right bout the myspace bein about bands thing, but what i meant was that Tom said they made the music part of it for like the indie bands and what not to get their music out to the people. See when I leave comments for my band, its not just the whole ADD US thing, I take time and write it out for the fans of that band since we leave comments on bands who influence us and have fans that may be into us. And personally im a music fanatic, like id rather go out and buy all the cds i can instead of just downloading them, so for instance we leave comments on like new found glory, blink 182, mxpx, and so on..'s pages and I have every single one of their cds (except mxpx cause they have a ton, but i have most of them) but then also on my own individual profile i go to their pages and check out everything and listen to their songs and everything else. So what im saying is, in my case i wouldnt necessarily even consider it spam cause its a lagitamite comment directed towards their fans encouraging them to just come to our page if they want to. Im not out to take over myspace, i just want to see how many people will come enjoy our music.

I'll jump in and say something...

The other day, I was browsing this writer's forum I go to once in a while. Someone posted a thread about rap. He was saying that, for the most part, he doesn't really get rap, since most rappers seem to be talking about bling and "hoes" and their own mad rap skillz. A couple people chimed in and agreed with him, citing Notorious BIG and 2Pac (among others) as references.

So, I typed a response, saying how there are plenty of rappers out there who actually are very good and rap about all sorts of things. I suggested he poke around on indie hosting sites (such as MF), and even included a little link to my own songs, since I've got 3 raps loaded in my MF player.

This guy totally flipped.

He comes back all pissed at me, claiming that I'm spamming up his thread and what not. I'm like: "Dude. I can't bring up the fact that I've written non-mainstream rap in a forum thread in which you requested non-mainstream rap??"

People are just like this, I guess. And that's okay. To be honest, it is kind of annoying when I see other people spamming up an otherwise decent conversation.

Between friends it's okay, but not between strangers...

By the way,
do we have an "approve all comments before allowing them to be posted" setting here for our MF pages?

No, we don't. Automated emails are sent whenever a new comment is posted on your page. So at that point, you can read it and delete it (if you don't like it).

But I like your idea better. That's the same way WordPress works. Before it's posted, you can read it, and click a link to approve or delete. I'll see what I can do (yes, we've heard that before). But I do tend to get most of those ideas taken care of (don't I)? Cool

On Myspace (sorry!!!) there is some way that people can leave a comment that can not be deleted....... I'm not sure why???????? Anyways, One of my friends got hit with it. So, I'm sure that it's real. If there was a possibility of that, that is the only reason I (personnaly) would want that option. But, options are always nice!

Thanks

Sam

You most certainly do, Greg. To be honest, sometimes I'm kind of amazed at how you manage to get it all done. And no doubt you've read everybody else's comments about how impressed they are that with your responsiveness. It truly is unparallelled.

So many kudos / props / respect to you.

Very Happy

On myspace there are options, such as, accept friend invites or comments, accept bands or friends only i have also noticed that on myspace.com 3 times till now they phished my account while people advertise their products or productions .In musicforte this did not hapen yet and i am proud to say that the less i get advertisement banners and etc the safer i feel from being phished from hackers. I think that it should be up to the member of that site to approve or dissaprove comments or adds from third party jokers. You all have a happy haloween. PSYLON

howdy ya`ll

Mr. Hunter is the only person to post anything on my page lately, and it was a youtube video of his old band...personally I like the guy, and enjoy most of his work, and understand his trying to draw more attention to his own site...as for myself though, I won`t do it. I want folks to listen to my stuff, but not at the expense of messing up sombody elses site. I`m kinda` like Sam...I`d love to be friends with most of ya`ll, and this is 1 of the few sites I have music posted that there isn`t a sense of "it`s a cutt-throat business", so if you wanna` swing by and say "hey" that`s cool...otherwise I`d appreciate folks not posting self promotion stuff on my site.
No biggy...it`s just how I feel

Happy Hallerweener

I agree, spam is more of an add saying come get a ringtone or try this new enhancer.
a band on a band site asking you to come and ck out their tunes isn't really spam. I personally try to give positive feedback or a positive message abt the site/page i am leaving a comment /a banner etc on.
Like some of you may have seen I give other groups my stamp of approval if I like their stuff, i don't have to like it all but I try to take a listen give them their kudos for a job well done and then yea I may place a banner or link bk to my site after this positive feedback.
It goes over real well and sometimes people need that feed back cause this indie thing can appear to be thankless sometimes so i like giving that feed back and i get great comments back as well.
but don't tell me abt ring tones and pls dont put some huge page distorting banner on my comments section a regular banner will do just fine and does not bother me.
pls the more links u have the better your google rating... remember MF put us in google right away...have u googled yourself.......
