| That's like asking why do studio musicians want to get paid. Your talent has a value. |

maybe, (just maybe), they think that they deserve some retribution for the time spended...(i'm beeing a smartass here too)
anyway, i do a lot of collaborations with local artists here in BuenosAires, and i never tought on charging anyone for a little help...
maybe, it`s because i'm really untalented and i'm aware of it!
you should look for the right people, those who'll give you a hand as a friend. |

well, i think you can feel that!
i've felt with a couple of characters, when they're trying to get me to do something that wouldn't be exactly for my benefit (not commercially speaking). Most things i do, i do them just for the kicks of doing'em!
but, i believe that not everybody have this kind of feelings...
anyway, keep looking, maybe you find the right people to work with! |

Most of the times its a legal issue also.
Like in the hip-hop genre when you make a beat for somebody, theyre not really buying the beat but rather buying permission to use it.
First you have what you call 'Leasing Rights', this basicallys means your just renting the beat and you have limited permission as to how you can broadcast your music. Usually its only online and raido play thats permitted.
And then you whats called 'Exclusive Rights', which means you now own all the rights to using this material which means you can put it out for download/retail, radio play, online play...the full package really.
And if somebody only has 'Leasing Rights' on an instrumental, somebody can come along and buy 'Exclusive Rights' which means it is now his.
But if thats not the case, then the transaction is almost a contract within itself.
Like if the guy selling gets played over, then he can look at the money like 'Oh well, at least I was paid'.
And if the guy who paid gets played over, then he can be smart and put it out for retail and make that money back, plus interest |
