So, when the people with labels are all trying to get out of their contracts and, try a different approach.......... Do they end up getting more out of it? Radiohead tried it for a while...... Prince did it..... Now NIN is going to give it a try.........
Here's a link to the story:
http://blog.wired.com/music/2008/03/nine-inch-nails.html
When these people are giving away their music, is it hurting all of the rest of us? Will anyone be able to sell music again? I'm beginning to wonder if they are helping advance the music business or totally messing it up.
What does everyone else think?
Sam
PS Somewhere in there..... there is a tip on how to download it for free. |

No, I really do want to know what everyone thinks. I think that every time someone pulls this little experiment, it devalues music. I think people feel that music is free now. I know there is a movement to stop the illegal stuff but, what about the "creative commens" lisencing stuff. These are people giving away their music. That just makes any of us that want to sell music "selfish". Does it not? What a turn off to fans. They don't see the whole picture of invested time and money, to create the music they listen to. They see this guy is giving away music, so should everyone else. Don't you think?
Seriously, what does everyone think?

Why give away your music for free?
Sure give away a couple of tunes to get people interested but you have worked hard on your music. Your tunes are something to behold, your musical children.
I personally can't really afford to let every thing I write go for free.
This free crap is killing the industry.
We should be working together to stop this nonsense.
Work, time and effort have gone into creating a piece of art.
Its not free!

OK fine... Then listen to your Uncle Indie. I have been telling everyone what WE can do, but they don't give a rats a**, they just keep on pretending that they are "distributing" but it is an illusion.
Let big name artists do what they need to. When you have 5-6 million in the bank, you can do whatever YOU want as well!
Nobody at THIS forum has answer for you Sam. It is not their fault, it is just a fact that their brains don't operate like mine does, and that is not anything to be ashamed of. I personally want to see you guys just create music and perform, I believe that is your job. It will not become anything until we organize and become a "union" of sorts.
But if y'all just want to keep on giving crap away, be my guest.

This is very true.
You can give away as much music as you like but its not going to get you any where because as a one person company what you can do to market your music is limited. You will only reach a few ears, not the millions of radio listeners and TV watchers around the world that you need to reach.
Hey, by the way
Did you get the songs I sent you? |

Simple, concise, true.
I've heard some people say that money corrupts art, and should never come into the mix.

Oh yeah, I received the three you sent. You probably already have my response on that by now, at least I have your return email to my overview, so I have that first batch. Unless you sent others, which is all good as well.

Money had always funded art.
In the past the money has come from rich patrons, The church, nobility, and then the middle class. in the 1900's Government grants and Universities financed the the Avant Gard.
Without the finance the only art you have is folk art.
The artist stops being skilled and becomes a hobbyist. |

... i'm NOT really bothered if NIN or Prince or anyone wants to give thear stuff away; if i Doanet think it's any good, i Won't pay for it, and i'm NOT going to suddenly like thear stuff just becasue it's free.
on The face of it, many of thease 'established' artistes are realising there's much better material than theirs out thear, or at least heavy competition from 'unknowns'. the 'Free' artiste stands a better chance of getting his music heard by a much wider audience faster than the traditional methods of marketing allow, so they're 'reverse bandwagonning' on those free distribution chains, and gaining incredible kudos for doing so.
but - like Everything - eventually a balance will be found, and it'll probably result in payment of some kind, perhaps cutting the prices on all music/recording sales by some percantage; everything has to be paid for, after all. the Days of artistes and record companies claiming high prduction/manufacture/distribution costs have gone, and a well-imformed consumer won't tolerate overpriced music forever

PS - check Out my musicForte page and have a lissen to some unique comedy material - most of which is FREE! |

The thing is, people have to know about you.
They will not pay for your music or download it for free unless they know about you and what your music sounds like. They are not actively looking for new music, they have to be fed it. |

that's Exactly right, but the availability of information sources now offers more potential for getting yoar stuff into the public eye than the expensive campaigns we're used to from establishment-artistes.
however, The QUALITY of yoar marketing has to be up to the same standards, and that's where the big expense comes in nowadays. image Stylists, PR companies etc. those Things are going to cost the same, regardless of how mutch you charge for yoar music, and you hafe two be pretty lucky indeed to 'break' without using those tools.
perhaps I'll start a new thread on self-marketing, now i'm replying to you and starting to drift off-topic ...

No offense, but what do you know about it? Really? Come on...
You gonna tell us about Itunes and all that nonesense? Not interested.
If it has to do with actually paying for something, like PR firms, etc., you would be wasting your breath around here. You are talking to people you have to pull eye teeth from to pay 30 lousy dollars to create a storefront, or people that expect everybody to do stuff for them for free and never offer them a buck. Hell, you aren't even a Gold member, so you haven't payed anything to help the cause yourself. Just uploaded all your songs and you are a marketer? Don't work that way in this life... Sorry.
Hate to be a party-pooper, it is just reality. If you want to though I guess no one can tell you different. I am sure you are a nice person, at least you seem that way, but I really don't think you should put the cart before the horse. Show us you sold something first, then talk about marketing. |
