as I mentioned before, I use the good old mail trick- which sometimes is difficult to mail registered to yourself if you work the same hours as the post office- so find friends or family you can trust that will be HOME during delivery times and instruct them on what's going on and never open it!
Now, although we have protection for our works- be it mailed or filed with the proper forms- I AM NOT CERTAIN- BUT I KNOW THE SONGS I HAVE POSTED AT MUSIC FORTE' ALL HAVE TIME/DATE STAMPS ON THEM- DOESN'T THIS ALSO CARRY SOME WEIGHT? If somebody wants to get all nuts on me, I can show them the mail-stamp with the date on it, then show them the date uploaded here.

Now- of course, this site is a GOOD and DECENT site- but I HAVE seen some other music websites (who I forgot the names because they looked shady) where the fine print BEFORE you agree to be a member says that anything written on the medium of said webpage becomes the property of whoever holds that webpage.. so I think this means that if I just type out some lyrics off the top of my head in one of their forums- they actually hold some rights to it.. so before you hit the "Accept" button- PLEASE make sure you read everything at some of these places! (or just make sure that whatever lyrics you post in their sites are complete and utter Bullsh*t..LOL)

Also, if you use recording software, be sure that all of the loops (I use them for Drum Tracks and some fills, one shots and so forth) are royalty free. The Sony ACID libraries are such, and some of the Pro Tools track libraries are, too.

This leaves you free and in the clear.

Copyrighting is an important step, but when it comes down to legal proof, if you can provide the master recording in court all other claims fail. I backup every master file of every recording I have and if required, with a PC and the correct versions of Cubase, only I can produce the master recordings of my music as evidence of ownership. So long as I have those masters and no one else does, or has access to them, my copyright is legally secure - and so is yours. So each of you just might consider backing up those multi-track original files to DVDs from your recording software and store your legal rights.

As for government copyright, as far as I know, an mp3 backup on a DVD with a ton of your songs on it (versus a straight CD audio disc) should cost the same. I can store almost all of my creations in mp3 format on 2 DVDs and when I get around to copyrighting with the feds can probably copyright a collection of over 700 cuts for that 30-45 dollars. Something to think about. More bang for the buck.

Wow reading Christine's story is really encouraging for this fact.
It makes me aware of the dangers. I play music for fun and like to think that if I ever worked with people in band or a duo that the aspect of ownership would work in an honest manner.

How important is it to copyright my material? And do I need to copyright the lyrics separately from the recordings? Do I need to notate the arrangement and copyright that?

I've read some stuff on the US Copyright website and while I know I can copyright just written lyrics, notated music and recordings individually, but what I want to is do I need to do all? Just one? How do I cover all bases?

Its very important as a artist. Yes that two different matters.I strongly agree you need to notate the arrangement and copyright your materials.
