RENEGADE review
“Renegade”, Bill Samsel’s debut CD on the Brimstone Records label is now available. The reason it is entitled, "Renegade" is obvious when you listen to songs like "New World Order (comin' to your town)" and "For The Sheeple". On the inner sleve, Samsel quotes the lyrics of Steve Vaus…
They railed against the crown, another rag tag band,
declaring independence.
They laid their bodies down, won a bloody war,
and liberty for their descendants.
Thank God for the renegades, and the lives they lead,
far ahead of their time.
Without the renegades , Lord knows where we'd be!
When it comes to heroes,
renegades are mine!
“I can’t stand by and do nothing and watch America betrayed by a government that no longer serves the people.” Says singer/songwriter Bill Samsel. “What I do is music and I think music can be a weapon to use against the powers that be. That’s what rock and roll has been about from the beginning isn’t it? Hasn’t rock and roll always been about flaunting rebelliousness in the face of ‘the establishment?’ Well, I think its time to hit the establishment over its friggin’ head! Musically speaking, of course.”
In "Things are Today" Samsel sings that…
“The people who make the rules...treat you just like a fool...”
and then asks the question…
“Hey, how do you like the way things are today?”
Samsel's vocal style is somewhat reminiscent of Donovan, (remember him?) but Samsel plays around with timing and sylables in a way that makes his vocal style rather unique. The music has a tight, clean, jazzy feel to it on several tracks such as "NWO", "Deprogram if You Can", "Everything is Fine" and "Give Your Undyin' Love". However, it’s not ALL about political statements, because Bill proves he can sing a ‘baby I love you’ song as in “Give Your Undying Love”, then go into driving, pounding rock (as in "Move it All to China") then hit you with island reggae (as in "Goin' to Bermuda") and then end up with a Bee Gee-esque soft rock ballad (as in "For the Sheeple").
Renegade is a showcase of Samsel’s diversity as a songwriter, uniqueness as a vocalist, and certainly one man’s blow against the empire.
“It isn’t something that’s going to go away if you ignore it. There’s a growing movement in this country of people who are waking out of their media-induced stupors and they are getting angry and asking questions and wanting truth and change. The truth is out there if you know where to look. With “Renegade”, I hope to help point the way. If I can help to inform folks through the music, and more and more people start to stand up for themselves and ourselves as Americans, then maybe we can hand freedom, liberty and prosperity down to our descendants…and rock n’ roll too!”
The name is Bill Samsel. The CD is “Renegade” and it is available at xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx This reviewer is impressed and wants to hear more from Bill Samsel.
