| I tend to gravitate towards female jazz/ blues artists. I don't know, more feeling, angst, more drama when your a woman. Any thoughts? |

Are you talking about vocalists? I don't think I could agree if it was brought down to other instruments.
I haven't done much research on this, but it seems like women dominated the role as the "jazz singer" back in the day.
Dinah Washington, Betty Carter, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, Etta Jones, Ernestine Anderson... etc.
As for the guys, off the top of my head I think about Nat King Cole, Joe Williams, Chet Baker, and some others. For some reason, stars like Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra haven't influenced me the same. Maybe their star appeal dominated the more intimate connection with the music for me.
Back to your question... Maybe it's not "gravitation" but selection. Haven't women dominated this position in Jazz music. That would make sense with my earlier comment because I can't think of any female jazz drummers, trumpet players, etc.
However, it seems like the jazz piano position has been filled pretty well throughout the years. |
