I've been using this software for about 6 months now and I'm still learning new things.

I have been able to finish a few tracks, though, which makes it all worthwhile.

Anyone else find this great / irritating etc?

I'd love to hear your thoughts / experiences.

I'll be honest with you. I used Cakewalk software since Vers 2 when it was midi only. Gave it up for a few, then went to Sonar on a recommendation a few years back. Loved it, but then after 5 it outgrew my computing capability with no overhead left, so I switched to Tracktion by Mackie and fell in love. Really a great piece of software.

I think I will always have a soft spot for Sonar (Cakewalk), because I know it so well and it is great. I will say that this Tracktion is fantastic also and more affordable by far.

Sonar is primo though, I will always be a fan. The ONLY thing that was buggin' me? They seem to change versions really fast anymore. I know why, of course. It is because they aren't making the money they want to make. With Bit Torrent and P2P rampant, anyone can get the software for free, so they change it a lot to stay ahead of the theft curve.

It shows how much I still need to learn as I'd never heard of Tracktion!

I will certainly investigate this software - is it compatible with midi files?

I think Sonar is not as good for rock musik as Nuendo or samplitude

The writers at Sonar have done a really advanced job of adding to their
package what their customers say they want. OK many of these "improvements" have nothing to do with MY methods, but every user could probably add that comment to a review of any software. What HAS been
noted, by my friends and lots of P-T users, is that they've out- done the
P-T platform in terms of the price/value ratio and show no signs of going away quietly. I know P-T is an industry "default" but if you can sit in on
a P-T session sometimes, you will be surprised how stodgy it looks/behaves
and how clumsy the interface to do cool things in the realm of trak manip-
ulation.
The sonar "project' and "bundle' are total saves of everything and are FAST.
The only thing you can't do is save direct to dvd, must pull those 'save' files
into a dvd writer, and there's lots of them in freeware.
Sonar and Wavelab are my two computer heavies, you can do ANYTHING
with them, but they will not create a top ten single unless you can create a top ten single (are there really such things anymore?)
My friend Benny Tillman has his studio, I have mine and now we've got the CWB bundle thing happening we can do vocals and drums in his
small-but-neat environment, bring the dvd to my large-but-chaotic
place to do gtr with my excessive load of 30 years of never throwing
any gear away. I used to dread "going out to record" at commercial
studios--or anybodies studio--cause I'd have to bring only what was
realistically portable, no Leslie, no multiple cabs that all sound different
--so as to have options of "rainbows of tone"--and for God's sake don't ask anyone for help with the two rolling racks! Now I put the whole
session in my pocket on a shiny piece of plastic! Something good and useful to come from the digital revolution! Cherish while possible, who
knows when they will make it illegal...

I was using that Tracktion software as I mentioned. I went all the way back to Sonar 4. It's plenty for the job and I have all the plug ins in the world anyway, even the ones they are peddling with the newer Sonar versions.

For the age of my computer Sonar 4 was perfect. I went all the way to 6, and then used Tracktion for awhile. The Mackie product was cool, but Sonar is easier for me to use. I am just used to it and can get more done quicker.

Primarily I record radio shows with it. But I have two new songs in the mill as well.

I also had Soundforge 9, dumped it and went back to 8. My old set up was the best ever and just because something is newer does not always make it that much better. What I discovered is that all that high bit stuff is a waste of time. 24 bit is more than enough. It all gets mixed down and dithered to 16 in most cases anyway, or squashed into an mp3, so all that high bit stuff is not that necessary. Nice to have, but not necessary.

that would top Sonar for ease of use...the ones where you load a sample
dvd, drag/drop the loops and push play...Yeah yeah it's hard work all right
and if Paganini were alive today he wouldn't waste all that time learning to
transport souls with his axe when for only $199. you can get the entire
Hollywood Bowl String Section..5 gigs!! each note played 3 different ways!
Oh drat, I was gonna declare a moratorium on venting...
