Kenny Burrell - I got hooked when I bartended at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago. A lot of greats came in there an the coolest part was that while I was setting up the bar getting ready for the show, it was just me and them.
I have tons of autographs - My favorite autograph is the one I have from drummer, Elvin Jones.
Now I have somewhere to talk about these stories.... But I'll post a new thread....
I guess Kenny Burrel is still my answer, but that could be because I haven't listened to a whole lot of Jazz guitar. |

I've liked Larry Carlton's playing for a few years now. The way he structures his playing is nice- usually more melodic than other players. I would also have to put Pat Metheny on this list. Also some of the mid 70's era Jeff Beck Fusion stuff that Beck did with Jan Hammer on albums like "Blow by Blow" and "Wired" -those two albums really grabbed me as a kid guitarist and showed me this whole new world of possibilities that lay outsde the realm of standard "rock guitar". I also have to say Django.. I mean he pretty much started jazz guitar and I'm glad to see some of this gypsy jazz movement coming back- saw some concert on public broadcasting a few years ago and there was some really good new guy doing Django type stuff but couldn't recall the name..anybody know who I mean?? |

| I bought this CD called Melange by Lonnie Plaxico. First listen was only so-so. After listening a few times, I love it. Worth recommending. Lots of complexity. |

Hiram Bullock is pretty cool- I've heard him do some stuff on the "Les Paul and friends" cd and I think he's done stuff with Bowie in the past- very versatile player!

I think it is very hard to determine who is the best jazz guitarist past or present, and I really do not think that things should be looked at in those terms. Now if you say who is the best jazz guitarist you have seen perform or that you have heard on a recording then that is one thing, because I guarantee you that as many as you have heard, you have not heard them all! There have been so many great jazz players, Charlie Christian, Barney Kessel, Howard Roberts, Tommy Tedesco, Wes Montgomery, Grant Green, Tal Farlow, Joe Pass, Django, and I could keep going on and on. Then there are the jazz guitarists that are still with us Jimmy Bruno, Geroge Benson, Mark Whitfield, Russell Malone, Joe Diorio, Kenny Burrell, Pat Martino, Bill Frisell, Bireli Lagrange, and I could keep going on and on with the living guys too. Now when you say jazz what form of jazz are you talking about, traditional straight ahead, bebop, contemporary, fusion, there are so many sides and facets of jazz. The wonderful thing about seeing great players play, or hearing their recorded projects, is that we can absorb their ideas, digest them, see why they used certain passages, phrasing, learn from them, and apply what we like, and throw away the rest. Every player that I have mentioned here had somethng different to offer from their playing style, none of them played or play the same way, they have their own unique individual voice, because they are individuals. We all absorb things from players that we admire and love, and we could argue from now until eternity who we think is, or are thes best, but why when we can just appreciate what they all have contributed in their own unique and special way! |

But also we shouldn't forget the late Charlie Byrd. he was one of my influences. He had a really nice laid back style.
I agree with Boosweet, its not a competition. The whole beauty of jazz is about improv and getting out what is in your head. I love those sessions where lots of musicians from different backgrounds get together an jam. |

Yeah, I meant who do you like, not necessarily who do you think is best. Best is simply a matter of opinion. |

Pass the Drum is wonderful and of course I love the vocals by Leonard, but nothing takes the cake of the earliest work with Kevyn Lettau. She is an amazing musician and soloist and her greatest days were with Peter Sprague.
