Also, I started liking Radiohead in December... I got all of their albums within a month! |
Yeah, I just picked up their "Hail to the Thief" CD. Another quality Radiohead experience. |

Here are a few albums/artists who've greatly enriched my life. I wish more people would listen to them so they would release more stuff so that I could have more of their stuff to listen to (I'm selfish that way)
Sarah Dougher -- rough indie-rock lady with such hits as "Secret Porno Collector" and a cover of "Take it to the Limit" that actually makes that Eagles tune sound good.
Best albums: "The Walls Ablaze" and "Day One".
I haven't heard much out of her in a few years and I've only seen her stuff in stores that sell used CD's, but I'm sure you could find her stuff online. I ordered everything she ever released online a few years ago so you can too!
Unified Theory -- Remember Blind Melon? Well after the lead singer died they got a new singer (who kinda sounds just like the old singer which makes me wonder if he ever really died) and re-grouped to form Unified Theory. While their not exactly a lesson in metaphysics, their music stylings can only be described as tight. Their sound is something close to the euphoria evoked by listening to Radiohead or Pink Floyd with the deep and evocative yet understandable lyrics of Blind Melon.
The only album I know of them releasing is self-titled and I think it came out in 2000. Again this is one that will have to be tracked down online or in used CD stores. Please buy this CD! You won't regret it and maybe it will convince them to release more! I NEED more Unified Theory!!!
The Magnetic Fields -- I'd have to say that of my short list, these guys may be the most well known. Their a small group that relies on a piano, an electric cello (and sometimes a regular cello), guitar, mandolin (or some kind of instrument in the lute family), some synthesizers and a voluptuous woman's voice coupled with the deep base tones of a surprisingly small white guy.
Their most famous collection is called 69 Love Songs and it features some songs I couldn't live without like, "Alseep and Dreaming", "Papa Was a Rodeo" and "The Book of Love" (which starts off, "The book of love is long and boring..."). And for those of you who can't stand love songs, have no fear, I can't stand them either but I love these. Where else would you hear about a man who's, "papa was a rodeo [and] mama was a rock-and-roll band" finally finding his true love in a smokey bar and living out his dreams of "wrestlin' gators" with her?
Reconsiderate -- All of my music loyalties lie with this artist. Though I only discovered him about a year and a half ago, I listen to him everyday. If you want something that at first will wash-over you like a cool breeze until it's meaning seeps into your soul and sets you on fire, then he's the artist for you. Check him out right here on MusicForte and spring the $0.50/each for a few of his songs then email him and bug him to send you some of his old stuff (especially the spoken word and beat-boxed tracks). He is very responsive. Check him out, you won't regret it. I particularly enjoy some of his old stuff off of Spring the Bear Trap.
One last note, if any of you who are reading this like musicals, go find a recording of the musical Chess by ABBA (they also wrote Mama Mia) and listen to it until the CD wears out! This music is especially good for women with alto voices looking for a leading-lady's music to practice for auditions (in my humble opinion). I've used it for a few and Florence's (the lead) songs are so touching and emotionally powerful that (when done well) blow people away! With fair warning, this musical is VERY 80's. In fact, if you're a child of the 80's you may remember the hit single One Night in Bankok from it's soundtrack. For me, this musical was the best thing to come out of the entire decade...
Okay, I'm done for now. Please tell me if you've ever heard any of this music before and if you like/dislike it and why. And, I'd love to hear your picks from music on the fringe whether it be musicals or single singer/songwriters or bands that you thought were dead, but really faked the over-dose...
Next time: the odd similarities between Elliott Smith and Nick Drake... |

home -- Enya, Watermark
car -- keeps switching back and forth from the Musical Chess and Bad Religion's Empire Strikes First
MP3 Player -- Reconsiderate (everything) and Perfect Circle, Mer de Noms
And some people say I'm not really into music...

Yup. The LP is so moving, and so tight. Easily on the upper tier of music in my collection. |

Wing's "Band on the run" .... recently got a copy and had forgotten how great it was.
"Boz Scaggs" and "Chicago Live" ... got from local library yesterday... "25 or 6 to 4" (Chicago) along with the Eagles "hotel California" have the best 2 guitar solos of ALLLLLLL time ... no exceptions. |

I've been listening to a lot of Reconsiderate lately actually!
I downloaded everything I've ever been able to get my hands on that he's produced and I just listen to it over and over... |

| I accidentally tripped on an old Tangerine Dream c.d. that I didn`t know even exsisted..."Phaedra" circa 1970,...pretty trippy stuff,...generating that kind of sound wouldn`t be all that hard today, given access to all the available filters, and analog equipment we have today,...but these guys were doing this stuff in 1970,....Geez,..what planet are you from?...lol,...very trippy stuff.........Also,an old bluesician friend of mine, "Gerry Moss",....gave me one of his c.d`s today,..."Nickles & Dimes",....this guy has been doing the Memphis blues scene for years,...pretty cool stuff........peace out....Drop The Sun |

And I definitely mean those two CDs (Kula Shaker & Frisbie) from three or four posts up in this thread! Check 'em out! High recommendations! |

Garbage - They've always been a band whose full body of work I've loved and respected. But lately I've been putting their stuff back on heavy rotation. They just have such a unique and sexy sound. And I feel like their lyrics are really relatable. I've totally fallen back in love with them.
Oh, and is it ever really a bad time to listen to Prince? I think not. |
