i ve got a lot of stuff now, but years ago i only had an old upright piano/drum machine and keyboard.
Its interesting 2 see how computers have pretty much taken over electronic music, Im a bit traditional coz i only use real synths/keyboards. i have no virtual intsrument. But im looking at sum and may b ill even try and learn sum of them 2
Ive got rid of the piano now mostly coz it was a real pain 2 tune and i jus kinda lost interest in it.
My uncle got me a semi acoustic guitar witch i trying 2 learn still finding the time is the worst fing.
as 2 bits of kit i use in order of current use:
roland Mc909
korg em1
roland xp60
roland sh32
roland mc303
I got other stuff but i dont use it much.

I play acoustic guitar mainly. I have a Martin DM which spends alot of time in the case these days as I have aquired a Art and Lutherie AMI parlor style guitar. The AMI is great for Delta Blues and Folk picking. I also play a bit of harmonica.
I've got an epiphone special 2 electric but don't do electric much these days.

Heh! I play a real bass, piano and keyboard plus anything that makes the right noise for the job!!
The bass is a Musicman Stingray - which I love playing - easy to slap and finger with a nice sound...
The keyboard is a Roland XP80 - which is old but I like cause it has 76 keys...I would love to have a baby grand but have no room at this time...
I have even sampled my bass - sampled the thumbslap on the string and used it as a kind of tuned drum-worked well!! I used the inital attack portion only and sliced and diced it... - Kinda crossed over between a Timpani and a log drum...but meant I could do really cool rolls and fills that had a different sound..kinda meaty but deep and low without overdoing it...
Another good trick when you need just that whispery shaker - get a paper cup and experiment with what you put into it - gladwrap the top and go!!
Ive used cashew nuts, pepper corns, sand and salt plus M&Ms..LOL!!
There are some great virtual instruments out there..but theres nothing like the real thing..
Sometimes even ripping up paper can be useful as an effect..ooops!! especially when you reverse it..
LOL! its all good fun ....the most fun is playing with real people and making music...seeing what comes of nothing in an improvisation session..its both risque and risky which is what make music so wonderful..there simply nothinglike bouncing and reflecting ideas with an instrument or other players and getting immediate response..especially when it sounds good...
At the end of the day its not just what you play but how you play it and what you choose to play...imo...(if this sounds strange I apologise)
Cheers |

I play my six string, but I play it upside down, with the strings switched so I play high strings up. I've played it that way for five years but I still get people who yell from the audience "Hey! Do you know your playing the wrong way?"
Sometimes I hook a stethoscope up to it and mic up the steth.
I also play keyboard, banjo, squeezebox, lap steel, harmonica, and some other little stuff.
check it out, if you comment on my stuff I will comment on yours...its common logic isn't it?

That's actually very insightful... a lot of people argue about what is music and what is not music based on the textures of the composition. So, that random and unstructured mess over there is a song because it was recorded with a guitar, but this perfectly balanced composition over here is not because it was written with synthesizers.
What was the first instrument? Most people would probably say the voice. After that? Probably drums of some kind. Then what? Some kind of flute or thumb piano? When somebody first invented a guitar, and it was brand new, there was probably someone out there who'd say: "Ag! What a racket! That isn't music!" But then, over time, the instrument evolved and is now an accepted standard tool for making music.
Hard to imagine from our modern perspective, maybe, but plausible. Same thing goes for other instruments: organs, various string instruments and wind instruments, etcetera. We know that lots of people hated electric guitars when they first started happening. And so on.
The point I'm making here is that, if you carefully analyze what music is, you'll find it has absolutely nothing to do with the instruments or the notes or anything like that. It's the arrangement of them. It's the sequence. Music is a time structure. It's something that we perceive as patterns change.
To truly appreciate music requires a type of intelligence that I guess not everyone has. It means you have to look beyond what's right in front of your face and see the meta-patterns that have spawned it. Truth be told, this is a fantastic method of heightening your personal prescience.

I like to use all sorts of things to make music - some of the PHATest sounds I've used have been from the Casio VZ synth range - something about the way thet used phase distortion to produce sound waves was magical..
I really regret selling it now... |

| ok ok ok,...since everyone is telling I feel sort`of obliged to tell myself....I do things (musically speaking) that aren`t supposed to be done, but I spent a couple of years trying to figure out how to make certain aspects of my music really unique to my own sound...so I run my voice through a Boss ME-8 on alot of echo,...but to the beat of my music....and don`t bother looking for one, I had it specially made, I also run my keyboards and bass through it....I play Roland and EMU keyboards Peavy Bass, Peavy & Epiphone guitars, Crate and Synheiser mics, Yamaha cello & violin, and excuse me for demolishing virgin ears and minds, but f@ck a bunch of computer programs, everything I have is component driven and based,...maybe a computer is not as cumbersome, but I love the hands on sound of an acoustic guitar, versus a video game any day....I also aquired an Akai 24 track from ebay, and record at 48 khz ....awesome sound,....before that I was using a Fostex 16 track that sounded a little flat,...but anywho; that`s enough info,...anymore and I`d feel like I was giving away my art.....peace out....Drop The Sun |

I think that in an industry that has been inundated with traditional instruments, it is obvious that the music world should and will branch out into the land of mechanized music. Computermusic is a natural next step that should not be resisted. It will never be the only music. People will still turn to the classics and classical instruments, but use them and be inspired by them in diferent, unique and more eye-opening ways.
Stubbornly refusing to change is like stubbornly refusing to live.

the sound of coins jingling is good too. I had a friend in high school who always put interesting sounds between songs when he made me mix-tapes (I'm dating myself now…). Coins jingling was one of his favorites – especially big coins like half-dollars and dollar coins – better tone. |

Mostly I play guitar and kazoo but I like to record myself on different instruments so my music isn't as boring.
One of my CDs I put out uses an Electric Keyboard with different sound effects.
I also like to play the Baratone Ukulele.
I can play the harmonica but I don't really like to play it as much.
I saw a video of Genesis and thought it would be fun to try a Electric Bass & Guitar one of thoses double necks but I'm not sure.
Recently I wrote a song and recorded it on Banjo but I don't know what I'm doing with it. |
