EXCELLENT POINT!! -of course, I thank God that Elvis had the suit- in today's day we would be watching fat Elvis shakin' it in a pair of calvin klein briefs.. -now THERE is an image that is just WRONG.
But- remember..Elvis had the whole hip-swinging-garden-hose down the trousers thing going on. So we are back to flashing a little skin- or adding some bit of risque' to the music- (don't worry folks, I'm not going to do it until I sweat off those last few tubs of ben & jerry's!) back to the question
SO NOW, IS IT NECESSARY TO HAVE SOME GIMMICK -SEXY OR OTHERWISE?? - I remember that Steely Dan made it HUGE and for the first (oh I dunno- decade- at least) nobody really saw any of their faces and they didn't play ANY concerts- (now they do) -think about this- no gimmicks..just music (ahem- advertising slogan..I want some royalty pay for this idea!) NO GIMMICKS..JUST MUSIC.. OMIGOD..IS IT POSSIBLE?? |

I guess you're right there are some bands that do it but can you name any these days ?
Personally I take The Rutles as an example to us all that you don't need talent if you are funny. So if you can't sing or play very good make sure it's funny.
(oh btw greg I won't be posting any more today because it has said I exceded the amount I'm suppose to have for one day)

OK - So now we have to be even more extreme to get noticed and people who are not musicians make music and sell it by the truckloads....
Oh yeah...maybe all the A&R people now work for the same companies - so we have less and less people willing to take a chance on new artists and sounds/styles....Too many mergers and acquisitons??
Also the music industry dug itself into a nice little hole with their online ignorance and arrogance...I cant believe a computer hardware company now has the biggest music sales website in the world - iTunes...also look what they did to Prince or whatever his name is...thank god for MusicForte...and Greg!

Last - Mr Moderator - Reconsiderate - why is there a post limit on these pages - Im sure none of us are going to spam it up - if we do delete or trash our stuff...
Id like to hear more from some of these peeps about topics but having to wait seems silly..the conversation ebbs rather than flows...

Yeah, I know what you mean, mPHATic. Often times, I'll really get into a conversation and have 30 posts on a single day, but only get Music Forte points for 10 of them-- or whatever the upper bound is. Nevertheless, the limit is in place to keep things somewhat purposeful. (You'd be surprised just how much spam and pointless posts there would be without it.)

There are two types of people on this forum: those who are here to connect with others in a meaningful way over topics related music, and those who are just here to get points. The second type of person is going to be around for a little while, maybe have a good laugh here or there, maybe find a good link or be turned on to something else Music Forte offers (like the Gold, Platinum or Affiliate plans), but ultimately will be unsatisfied... and probably resentful... when he or she doesn't win the "portable media player", or whatever it is.
If I may speak on behalf of myself for a moment, I'd like to declare that I am interested to meet as many of the first type of person as I can. That's the type of person you can really mesh minds with, and that's where true substance comes from. |

Totally understand - some of these conversations are fairly deep - I wonder if the post limit could be increased or varied as you show your responsibilty or style does not conflict with the aims of the forums..
I'll stop now as I dont want to get off topic too much...
Thanks |

| You see.. it CAN be about music- and work! There are also some of Music's 'working class heroes'- Bob Dylan, Springsteen, Mellencamp, Tom petty and neil young all made it to their heights on how their MUSIC was- and no not EVERY song was a good song. Hell, some had whole ALBUMS that didn't sell as well- but they kept playing- kept writing and kept singing- even though they didn't look all that great, even though they didn't have the best voice- even though they could not dance well. they had a sense of honesty in their music that was needed at the time. I would not be surprised if this same type of "anti-package" becomes desirable amongst a lot of people again. The people may get tired of the boy bands or Britney-esque pre-packaged song and dance routine with it's flash, glossy productions and want to just have a guy with a guitar singing good songs again. I think that with the popularity of guys like Coldplay or James Blunt that people are slowly turning back to the music and away from the glitz. Don't get me wrong- we will always need music to dance to whether it be techno, or electronica, or disco or whatever- we will always need a few new "fun-party" songs but I think that maybe this needs to be balanced with a few more "singer-songwriter' types in the mainstream media as well. What do you think? |

LOL I just cant imaine any o these guys singing the "lumberjack song" to get famous.
yep credibility ...musical and ethically..very important..they all had it..
Flashy = trashy sometimes...there seems tobe a swing back to guitars big time - and if Cold Play is any indication "real bands"..
At this rate ELP will be reintoduced in some format...that would be great..
Or is music the next big "reality TV show"? who is that new band doing what INXS did last year..- oh yeah - Supernova...
Im finding it a little boring this year...nevertheless its great to see a live band and singer on the box!!
wonder what the ratings are like... |

| I love this forum stuff, and the set topics,...but I`d really like to see a chat room (for the musicians anyway)...I`m not particularly keen on hearing how much my music sucks, or that I should be beheaded for uploading "Dead Babies", but realtime chat I think might help alot of us with collaboration and such.....just a thought....peace out....Drop The Sun |

I can't really enjoy chat because I can't always think over a very good responce in a few seconds and posts are up for a while so you can read them anytime you want and correspond anytime you want which means if I read your post today I might think of something new next week and still post here but I'm not sure the same is true for chat. |

| Anyhow- getting back to the topic of rock heroes- are they still around.. well, not ALL of them are freaks- look at some of the "joe everyman" rock heroes like Neil Young, Bob Dylan or Bruce Springsteen- the big gimmick of some of these guys is there IS no gimmick- just fun songs or poignant statements. So- anybody recently that seems to be stepping up to the plate? |

Lets see there is no gimmick ?
I think their gimmick is their bad voice but actaully I would argue that Bob Dylan & Neil Young are more like Folk Heros then Rock Heros and that maybe another gimmick not playing the same type of music and establishing a different kind of music amoung the youth of today.
Someone might say here are 3 really bad singers proving that if you voice is uniquely bad enough that it will establish you different than the average performer but I agree if they didn't write such good lyrics I wouldn't like these artist so much. |

| A part of YOU has to just love the guys who can't sing or play very well who have made it to the top of the pile. It gives us all some hope that if we don't sing very well, can't play very well or if we don't bathe for a month that maybe we can STILL make it! - ok..in all seriousness- I gotta admit that I can only take some of these guys in small doses- but, mind you I love their works or their lyrics- I REALLY like it when someone ELSE does a Dylan or Neil Young song and gives it that good singing voice that really does it some justice. I have to admit that sometimes the "gimmick" is much more sublime- like when grunge first hit and I looked at some of these bands on tv and I said "dirty hair, mumbled vocals and clothes from the Sears catalog circa 1976.. and people WANT THIS??"- mind you, that was when I first saw it- and then somehow it became cool. (maybe this is an area for another post- when does "dumb" become "cool" and when does "cool" suddenly become "dumb" again?) |

I think that's a function of hegemony. When lots of people act "dumb", there's really little else that the populus can do but accept it. Now it's dominant. And when something is dominant, it speaks with great power to the underlings, the youth who are still developing. And to whom is the word "cool" pertinent? The youth.
On the flipside, when any given thing is "cool" for an extended period of time, it'll lose its kick. Give it time. It'll stop speaking to everyone and start speaking only to its core audience, its true audience. Thus, we have cool becoming dumb.
The phrasing "dumb becomes cool and cool becomes dumb" is misleading though, because it seems to imply that we're talking about one person who is dumb then cool then dumb again. More accurately, it's "dumb type A" which is seen as worthless by everyone, followed by "cool type A" which is seen as cool by everyone, followed by "dumb type B", which is seen as dumb by the masses, but as "cool type B" by its cult members. |

| So..you're saying that I woke up and found myself GETTING CONSERVATIVE... holy crap..when did THIS happen?? I used to be cool!! Ohmygod.. I cut off my hair, got rid of my concert t-shirts, started wearing shirts that actually have a COLLAR on them- got rid of the El Camino and now drive an SUV, went sober- now I drink a lot of Starbucks ..and I work for local government.. HOW DID THIS HAPPEN? I STILL LISTEN TO RUSH OR IRON MAIDEN ON MY WAY TO WORK..AREN'T I STILL COOL???!! LOL. |
rofl Greg... you should try writing some comedy into your lyrics. Maybe even just take one of your posts and make it into a song. In all seriousness, you've got a knack for it.
Rush. Now there's a good band who knows how to compose. I used to have a bunch of their CDs, but I don't know what happened to them. (I must have lost them when I moved or something.) Anybody heard the Tom Sawyer cover by Mindless Self Indulgence? |
YES YES -- Mindless Self Indulgence! This song is great! They're great! They're all the fun of drugs without the side effects and cost!
I agree with you on some of Greg's posts -- make them into songs.
On the topic of Rock Heros. They certainly still exists, but I haven't seen many new ones pop up. I agree that the era of Rock Hero is waning and being replaced by the American Idol or whatever other show is pumping out superstarts now.
I also agree with 1undred that it's cyclic... We'll go through the pop garbage for a while and (hopefully) everything will get good and introspective again. In the future they may not be Rock Heroes, but they'll be good, respectable musicians out there with something to look up to about them.
I vote for Reconsiderate and ArtPaul to become the Music Heroes of the future. |
