John Alfred Longlott was born of Canadian and American parents the son of an entrepreneur. A composer poet, percussionist, pianist, producer, engineer, and filmmaker John made his performance debut at age 9 at a Brigantine New Jersey motor inn with a jazz ensemble. He went on to perform at private parties high schools, night clubs, and colleges, which includes warming up for Philadelphia's The Dead Milkmen. Mr. Longlott studied piano and theory with the late Katherine Schiffner Phyllis Coolick, Elizabeth Lutley, and Xun Pan, formerly of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. In his teens he briefly studied voice at the Wyomissing Institute of Fine Arts and drums with jazz drummer/teacher Robert Clausman but is mainly self taught as a drummer percussionist and composer. His teens and early twenties also saw him performing with neighbourhood pick-up bands and in bars and clubs learning from more experienced blues and rock musicians. Before leaving the united states he studied music theory briefly with composer Andrew Bleckner. In addition to winning a rating of "Superior" in The American College of Musicians International Annual Composition Contest for his composition: In Your Garden he has received acclaim for his score of the motion picture: Highfalutin as well as his theme for a 1980s regional Ace Award winning cable movie review program: Thumbs Up Thumbs Down. 'Longlott has also received critical acclaim for his debut 1993 compact disc: Ode to the Poets' Quest for Death. He has performed in numerous U.S. and Canadian venues including New York's CBGB Toronto's El Mocambo, and more recently at LSPU Hall and the annual Peace Accord both in St. John's Newfoundland and Labrador. He has composed music for the short films FISHENEMY and the film GET REEL has just signed on to provide narration for and score an independent film about a u-boat in Newfoundland and Labrador.
He is presently in the process of writing and editing a script for his first film to be made through The Newfoundland Independent Filmmaker's Co-Operative (The First Time Filmmaker's Program). John Alfred Longlott resides in St. John's Newfoundland, Canada.
