His aggressive approach and fierce dedication to his music is apparent on every track he blesses and is the reason he's been able to advance through the saturated dirty south rap market to rise to the top. "I've always loved music that allows you to relate to something going on in your life," Mr. 1Chance says. "I liked rappers that talked about life lessons that you could apply to your life." He lists Scarface NWA and Biggie as early influences that later inspired him to pick up a pen and chronicle his own life experiences.
Growing up in the Riverwood community of north Houston 1Chance admits he initially went down the wrong path. "The trouble I got into was because of decisions I made and I take full responsibility for that," he admits "Some people have choices some don't. I had choices." Seduced by the streets and lure of fast money 1Chance's choices resulted in him facing some severe consequences as an adolescent. Doing a bid behind bars gave him time to evaluate his life and the direction he wanted to take as an adult. It was during that time that Mr. 1Chance began experimenting with writing poems first and then rhymes. "At first I was writing about what I saw in jail; then of course it was missing my family the search for freedom. I poured my emotions on paper and then I learned to deliver," Mr. 1Chance recalls.
After being released in 2003 he hit the ground running and immediately found a studio to further promote his craft. "I hooked up with my boy TaylorMade and we got in the studio and started grinding and getting exposure," he explains. In addition to getting his life headed in a new positive direction 1Chance also had to work at adapting his sound to the outside world. "I had to get back out and listen learn what was going on and then add that to my own personal style."
One thing that did not change was his allegiance to himself and the belief that his music should have substance to reflect the growth in his life. "I think a lot of rappers are scared to really talk about things. I know a lot of cats been thru some stuff. There should be more represented out there. I'm not afraid to touch on any subject that is real for me," he insists.
1Chance continued grinding and eventually hooked up with Dan (? Last name) and Jesse (last name) and Derrick McKinney with Been Down Records. The partners were impressed with the young emcee who seemed to captivate audiences and DJs throughout the southeast with his natural charisma and knack for storytelling. The partners decided to make 1Chance the flagship artist on the label and part of the Been Down Records family and 1Chance's career skyrocketed to the next level.
True to his first impression theory 1Chance currently has three singles being pushed on radio. The first "On It, On It" is a club banger; there is "Can't Stop My Shine" for the streets and "Oh My God" for the ladies. "I'm hitting them from all sides," he says "not leaving one stone unturned." In addition to radio campaign he's booked on a summer long promo tour that will cover the entire South and East coast.
Although his schedule has become hectic Mr. 1Chance insists he knows how to stay balanced. "My family is my inspiration my son and my own peace of mind," he states. Although he has come a long way from the misguided youth in Riverwood 1Chance doesn't believe in not looking back. "I'm taking everything I've been through and applying it to changing the game. As for my past I'll never forget I hold onto it for strength. If I forget what I've been through that's when I might slip or fall."
