20 YEARS OF BOURBON STREET ...
In January of '87, two rock bands from the Byron/Tweed area met with similar fates. After three years of popularity on the circuit, The Blest and Rockola reached their use-by dates and folded. Within a month the remnants, two players from each, formed Bourbon Street and debuted at the Top Pub in Byron Bay, now known as the Beach Hotel.
Local success was immediate and the band quickly became a fixture of the local area. From Southport to Coffs Harbour, Bourbon Street played every conceivable venue on any given night. The local papers were littered with articles, photos and ads depicting the band and it wasn't long before their reputation spread to the big smoke.
Sydney proved to be the perfect canvas for Bourbon Street to expand their horizons. As the crowds swelled, so did the demand for original material. In late '87, the band released a 45rpm single on vinyl. "Eyes the Size of Stars" slowly crept the local charts in early '88 and peaked at # 9 on the Lismore-based 2LM. An album soon followed in late 1988. "Stronger Than Dirt," featured six original songs and five covers. The first song on the first side was a cover of Neil Young's "Powder Finger" and this became the band's traditional opener for live shows. A young band who followed Bourbon Street and whose instruments were Bourbon Street hand-me-downs, chose this song title as their band's namesake.

20th ANNIVERSARY - February 22 thru 25
Hard to believe but one of Australia's most popular live bands is turning 20 next month!
Formed in February of '87 Bourbon Street released three successful albums and had a top-ten regional hit in '92 with the title track of their last album "Time Flies."
To celebrate their 20th birthday Bourbon Street have announced the official release and launch of their new CD entitled "Banned for Life".
Tour dates and venues are:
* Thur. 22 Feb - Illawong Hotel Evans Heads
* Fri. 23 Feb - Beach Hotel Byron Bay
* Sat. 24 Feb - Currumbin Tavern Currumbin
* Sun 25 Feb - Lennox Point Hotel Lennox Head
The four-piece group all original members, toured the US in '91 and were voted Australia's most popular live band at the '92 Dolphin Awards. The following year the band called it quits. They farewelled Australia on September 11th 1993 as the headline act at the Mullumbimby Supercharge Festival to a crowd of over 4000 playing well into the dawn before being literally dragged off the stage by the local police.
Popular demand brought the band back to life for reunion tours during the late 90's and they have continued to reform for special occasions ever since.
In late 2004 the band's creative juices began flowing again and the seeds for a fourth album were planted. Spurred on by the encouragement of Powderfinger guitarist Ian Haug the band continued to work on the new material before recording twelve tracks at Ian's studio near Brisbane.
"Banned for Life" is acclaimed to be their best album by far. A more matured sound coupled with Ian's creative guidance and the extraordinary assistance of Old Dog Studios in Corndale where the album was mixed has produced an enduring anthemic collection of pure Bourbon Street brilliance.
The CD will be available at the band's web site: www.bourbonstreetband.com for $20 but for the launch in true Bourbon Street anti-commercialism spirit the CD will be available to those attending for just $10
Excerpts from the album can be heard at www.myspace.com/bourbonstreetoz
All those who supported Bourbon Street in their seemingly endless 6-year tour in the late 80's and early 90's are invited to come along to any of the above dates for a very special night out.
