Coamhim is heavily influenced by a particular powerful factor in his life: Having been diagnosed with a Serious Mental Illness (shortly before his 20th birthday). For him it is not so much the diagnosis itself that has impacted him as it is the experiences he encountered and endured due to what he later was told by Mental Health professionals was in fact, a Mental Illness. He himself deep down inside, however cautiously so, is still skeptical that his experiences are able to be explained away with such a seemingly close-minded conclusion about what some aspect of Nature and The Universe allowed him to perceive for a period of time. This gives rise to a fundamental conflict that drives Coamhim's life: On one side of the conflict is the idea of the powers that be that what he has gone through can be chalked up to an 'illness,' a simple misfunctioning of his brain's neurotransmitters and nothing more. On the other side of the conflict is his unshakable gut-sense that the experience has been something so undefinably much more than just an illness that Coamhim himself is afraid to explore what that something might actually be.
In the world of material things Coamhim has everything to lose including the very few shreds of freedom he feels he has left. It is scary for him to consider the consequences of attempting to return to the state of mind and spirit that so many authority figures found undesirable and even threatening. Though this conflict is very very rarely addressed directly in Coamhim's lyrics there are hints of resentment toward a world and a culture that he feels has suppressed him present in what he says. The gravity that keeps his muse in orbit is constantly in danger of losing his muse to what Coamhim - almost - knows is The Truth. |
