Unwilling to succumb to the normalcy of 9-5 “day job” as a child psychologist Dr. Dawn set out in 2004 to become the coolest RockStar-Doctor no one (but her) could ever imagine.
Although highly respected as a doctor and strongly committed to her work with children with Learning Disabilities Dawn was unwilling to relegate her musical talents and passion to hobby-only status. Instead she created 2 separate alter-egos and by 2006 had gained national attention as a talented singer-songwriter and producer - all while still working in her private practice full-time.
Dawn coined her alter-ego name Manifest Frequency, based on principles from Quantum Physics/ String Theory and from her absolute belief in the healing power of connecting with others.
Although Manifest Frequency only officially consists of Dawn she has created a collaborative of like-minded musicians possessing similar drives and attitudes that comprise the primary performing sets for Manifest Frequency. While the specific lineup may vary from show to show consistency of performance and energy is always present.
During shows where Dawn is a solo performer Manifest Frequency comes alive thru the magic of a careful choreography between her laptop computer ( using Ableton’s LIVE & Propellerhead’s Reason); her keyboard midi controller, and guitars; and real time recording and live looping. Other times Manifest Frequency’s music is a simple acoustic guitar and a voice.
Manifest Frequency's music has drawn diverse fans from folk alternative rock, jazz and triphop persuasions and Dawn has been invited to play such festivals as Ladyfest South SXSW, ChicksRock Fest, MMC10, Hyperactive Music Festival, DFEST, and Atlantis Music Conference along with great venues from New Mexico to Kentucky.
Dawn received the 2005 Southern Voice Reader's Choice Award for Best Atlanta Female Musician and was the host coordinator for the 2005 Atlanta GoGirlsMusicFest.
As Manifest Frequency Dawn is currently in production of her 1st full length CD Deconstructing Frequency, with producer/musician, Michael Levine (APC Studios Atlanta), who frequently plays bass and guitar for her. The CD is currently being mastered by Spearhead Audio after winning a national contest through Sonicbids.
MFQ's music/lyrics reflect the vision of embracing diversity and overcoming oppression. In addition to being involved in numerous organizations as a psychologist Dawn is also active in organizations such as Human Rights Campaign and P-Flag. Besides having to meet the challenge of maintaining respect as a licensed psychologist with ADHD who tours as a full-time musician; she also has struggled against stereotypes as an openly gay woman working with children in the “Bible-belt” of the South.
Only because of her impeccable reputation along with testimonials from devoted clients was Dawn able to turn a forced “outing” by a conservative school district and loss of major referral income into a positive experience. Unfortunately this was not before Dawn was forced to file for Chapter 13 bankruptcy putting a major delay on finishing the debut CD. (Word to Wise: When you decide to title a CD something like Deconstructing Frequency you better be prepared!) Still working to fully rebound from this and other major losses over the past few months her motivation toward the musical goals is no less apparent.
Manifest Frequency is an open call to challenge the norm. It’s an education. It’s a challenge against mediocrity. And it’s encouragement to all who have ever felt different and are tired of apologizing for it! It’s also a message that sometimes the worst thing we think can happen ends up being the best thing – that sometimes it is necessary to fully become who one is supposed to be. It’s a lesson in honesty and willingness to use the self as an example to help others.
Currently Dawn is doing research for the development of a foundation using music as a vehicle toward raising money and awareness for ADHD-issues specifically those confronted by women and girls with the undiagnosed condition.
