Itto Pakarati Being a surfer and a musician still have time to
hang out with his friends. However Itto has become the youngest inspiration of Rapa Nui music
Itto Pakarati was born June 18th 1984 in the mystifying and captivating island of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) surrounded by hundred miles of blue water and about 2000 miles from the nearest continent. Rapa Nui one of the points in the Polynesian triangle is one of the most isolated places on earth. But that has not stopped Itto from getting around!
Itto is the son of a native Rapa Nui couple who was separated by their families at the time he was born. Months after his birth his mother left him and his mysterious father died. Consequently Itto was taken and raised by his grandmother referred to Itto as his “mother the inspiration of my life”.
He began his musical journey with a cracked guitar at the age of twelve. Being left handed he was taught and forced to play with his right hand. Itto was not convinced with the idea of playing with his right hand. After two years he secretly switched the guitar and played with his left hand. Today he is one of the few musicians in the world that plays guitar with the strings up side down such as well known guitarists Coco Montoya and Jimmy Hendrix.
Itto Pakarati was introduced to the music world by his uncle Kio Teao (R.I.P) a local music legend a hero in the ocean and a mastermind of his own culture and by Alex Ballerino a cousin, and a skilled ukulele player that shared his remarkable knowledge of playing that wonderful string instrument. Years later Itto earned a fine musical reputation amongst the musicians of Rapa Nui winning many of the festivals there. Nowadays Itto Pakarati is the youngest ambassador of Rapa Nui music spreading his culture, native tongue, and passion for music throughout the world.
Itto’s many songs are based on experiences of his everyday life but also he likes to keep alive in song the old traditions historical events, and injustices sadly committed against his people. His music is developing in many directions. With his unique style he creates musical compositions in Spanish and English but always adds his Polynesian roots. Itto’s other musical influences are from genres such as Soft Rock Reggae, and Soul. He likes to explore….
This guy is also a dedicated young surfer who discovered his passion for riding waves at the age of nine! He has won numerous surfing contests on Rapa Nui. Itto is well known amongst the local surfers for knowing how and where to surf every spot in Rapa Nui. “I feel a big connection between music and surf both are extremely vital to my existence,” “in my head I am always surfing”.
Itto Pakarati is gradually becoming well known around the world. Being a humble dude with a precocious smile he is often referred to as a young man with a mind of an elder because of his enthusiasm for life his wisdom and his serenity toward all things.
However Itto is also a traveler; having lived in places such as Germany United States, Chile, and Tahiti. This has helped Itto to have a greater connection with different surroundings cultures, and musical influences. At present Itto lives in Hawaii pursuing a degree in music education developing his surfing skills and performing. For him the world is an interesting place but Itto has his heart set on living in his beloved Rapa Nui.
Itto has published two CD’s in Chile/Rapa Nui (Te Ahi and Moana) and hopes to develop more in the near future perhaps with some of his new Hawaiian friends. |
