Catch the spirit and echoes of such diverse giants as Miles Davis The Police, John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Jimi Hendrix, and you begin to sense the uncommonly broadpool of inspiration from which this artist draws inspiration from.
Joseph Patrick Moore was born in Knoxville TN on October 1 1969. JPM was first introduced to music by his parents and his sisters Julianna and Susan Moore who encouraged him to study music through the public school band program. So at age 7 Joseph began his musical studies on the alto saxophone. His band director Chet Hedgecoth would become an early mentor. Mr. Hedgecoth would give Joseph words of wisdom practice tips and general encouragement throughout his school years. Upon entering High School Joseph began playing drums in the schools fall marching band while continuing the saxophone in the spring concert season. As a Sophomore he picked up an electric bass and immediately was transfixed by the low rumble and thunder of this instrument. Soon the alto saxophone and drums would take a back seat to the four string bass as his passion for practicing and playing bass was personally more rewarding. A need for instruction and guidance led the developing musician to Rusty Holloway who was a former member of Woody Hermans Band and a music teacher at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. With Rustys insight he got Joseph to consider going to college and to concentrate on music. So with a full academic scholarship offer Joseph would go to UTK to pursue double and electric bass with a major in classical and jazz performance. Under the tutelage of Rusty Holloway Donald Brown, Jerry Coker, and the rest of the talented UTK music staff Joseph would remain at this University until 1991.
After two and half years at UTK he relocated to Memphis to attend the University of Memphis and to pursue more and greater performing opportunities. Moores years at the University of Memphis provided insights into songwriting recording, and a sense of history about Memphis and its roots. Shortly after his arrival this Tennessee native found himself ensconced on the Historic Beale St. scene performing nightly with the Charlie Wood trio at Kings Palace Cafe. During this time he continued to develop his musical skills by working studio sessions teaching and performing around the Mid-South with artists such as the Memphis Groovetet James Williams, Marie Osmond, Jerry Lewis, Herb Ellis, Carol Channing and many other diverse artists. It was also during this time that Joseph won and received the prestigious Milt Hinton Scholarship for further jazz studies. In late 1996 JPM created an independent CD titled " Never Never Land" featuring many Memphis musicians and friends. This debut recording and effort received radio play in 36 states charted on CMJ and also helped to get him nominated by the Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences for a premier player award (N.A.R.A.S./Memphis Chapter/April 1997).
In mid 1997 Joseph decided to move to his current home of Atlanta GA. Upon arriving in Atlanta he soon joined Capricorn recording artist Fiji Mariners featuring Col. Bruce Hampton. Cult legend Col. Bruce Hampton would regularly invite guest artists to sit in with the band. Some of these artists that Joseph got to work with while a Fiji member were; Shawn Lane Jimmy Herring, Warren Haynes, John Popper, Michael Ray, Derek Trucks, Oteil Burbridge, Phish members Jon Fishman and Mike Gordon and many others. Shortly after his stint with Col. Bruce Hampton Joseph was performing regularly in Atlanta and the South-East area as well as national tours with Leo Nocentelli (Meters) and BlueGround UnderGrass. JPM would join and remain with hickhop jamband BlueGround UnderGrass for more than 2 years with a final farewell concert at the Bottom Line in NY in February of 2002. During this period Joseph would release two more jazz world eclectic CDs titled "Soul Cloud" and "Alone Together".
In 1993 Joseph formed Blue Canoe Records. An independent label that focuses primarily but not exclusively to jazz. He recognized the need to form a label that will allow not only his music but a diverse array of musicians to document their best efforts without the commercial pressures that have become the norm throughout the industry. The need to form a label and his deep love of music and concern for budding musicians is perhaps also shown through his association with musicdojo.com. In late 1993 JPM joined musicdojo.com, the next generation of music education and he created several interactive online music classes which can be taken monthly over the internet. Since Joseph started his musical journey with music in the schools it seems only fitting that he would give back a little of what was given to him.
Currently bassist/composer Joseph Patrick Moores life journey continues to be consumed by pursuing the sounds colors and rhythms of music in life. Joseph performs with his own group as well as other artists. To date JPM has released 4 CDs and appeared on more than 40 recordings by various artists. JPMs latest release JPMs Drum n Bass Society - "Vol. 1" features 15 tunes that reflect his current personal modern musical odyssey. |
