Born to Haitian parents in Brooklyn New York and raised in both Dade and Broward county Florida music became a part of my life at the tender age of nine years old. The contrast between my view of the world growing up and my immigrant parents' view of the world caused me to gravitate to the only thing that gave me release...MUSIC. I started to write and sing listening to everything from Imajin to Aaliyah to Tatyana Ali to Blaque and from then on music was in my blood. I would often go around the house looking for any tapes that I thought my father didn't need. I would record some new lyrics and melody to a song that i had come up with so i wouldn't forget it. Notebooks were not just for school anymore they were the resting place for songs that are still on my tongue today. My mother raised me in the church and i debuted with my first solo at Pembroke Road Haitian Missionary Baptist Church singing the song "Second Chance" with my youth choir. I remember that day so clearly and am so grateful for my mother and my youth director. At that point I realized that I could not only write songs and sing them in the privacy of my room I could share those songs with people publicly. I continued to sing in church and even at school joining my middle school choir and later developing my voice in my highchool's gospel choir. Throughout all of this i fought to push my parents into thinking "out of the box" and attended everything from Barbizon Modeling to various casting calls as well as an acting school that went bankrupt after a year. I would not be deterred. I graduated highshool with high hopes for college. After attending Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton for two years I transferred to the University of South Florida in Tampa and that is where I am right now. Tampa has been good for me creatively as there are so many fearless musicians here who grind daily. Being in college is the best thing that could have happened to me. I am independent now;I know who I am and I know what I want. I am 20 yrs. old and I have a younger sister and brother. (I'm the oldest!!) I realize that God is my foundation and with every down there is an up. Singing is my passion and I want for nothing more than to share my gift with the world- no underlying or alternative motives. Rejection is not something I fear...it is something I turn into a tool in crafting a better me. So I will continue to pursue my dream until it is realized. I have come too far to ever think of giving up. This is simply the beginning of my biography (or should I say autobiography) since I'm writing this. The body and conclusion will follow soon and will probably need to be published...LOL. "Lend your ear to me i desire to make you happy". -Kerlyn .. |
