Coming up through the ranks of Raleigh’s “New York South” recording stable is King Ayoola – lyrically fresh and conscious to the maximum. With 16 self-produced tracks of positive self-awareness Ayoola voices over a number of familiar reggae dance-hall licks while adding just enough hip-hop remixes to leave you firing up your lighters for more. From his introduction “Original” to the gracious “Jah Bless De Sound” the King rides each rhythm with a deep resonant tone, echoing the likes of Shabba Ranks from days past. With plenty of stamina and imaginative songs in the bag Ayoola pays ‘nuff respect to all African queens (“Brown Woman” and “Jerusalem Queen”) while assisted by talented singer Kristina on “Up All Night” – a beautiful tune worthy of FM airplay. “Rise Up” has the potential to blow up as the catchiest single to come out of the South since Petey Pablo’s uncannily similarly title “Raise Up” and while big-dawg record execs look in this direction for new talent we may have to one day declare that the “King has left the building” once again.
