My operatic voice was nutured by the late great basso cantante Jerome Hines, we share the same birthday and are Scorpios. Rod Macwherter helped me ground my voice and connect it to the earth, Jerome helped free my voice to fly.
My jazz drumming began with the late Larry Tandal who taught in Wahiawa, Hawai. Jim Chapin was his teacher and I was lucky to have Larry as my guru. Then studied with Alan Dawson at his home in Lexington, MA. It took me over two hours going and coming back on the subway and the bus plus walking a mile through heat and snow! His innovative use of the Rex Reed book was and still remains challenging. Studied with Gary Chaffe in Boston whose books and methods are amazing.
My Jazz ears were opened up with Clarence Awaya, the big band director at Leeward CC. He told me to check out Tony Williams instead of Buddy Rich! We had the best cookouts behind the LCC bandroom thanks to guitarist Tom Chun who was the master of the Korean Barbeque! We had the keys to the bandroom so someone would be practicing in there 24/7. Thomas Hamasu would be giving the upright a workout and Woodson would be running his Bach and Chopin to perfection. I would be taking a nap on the timps when I ran out of gas!
Whitney Thrall at the University of Hawaii got me started on the piano at the University of Hawaii. Later John Olsen at Manhattan School of Music helped me get my piano chops together with Chopin and Bach.
Teruo Nakamura allowed me to learn through osmosis from recording the best Jazz musicians in New York City. Harry Whitaker on piano and Lonnie Smith on organ used to blow me away with their chops and concepts.
Dr. Manzo, the late choral professor from Eastern Washington University lit the flame for singing when he conducted the Hawaii all state high school choir. I thank all my teachers for sharing the light of music with me., |

Tony Williams and Elvin Jones on drums. A mix of Cesare Siepi and Ezio Flagello when singing opera. A mix of Mark Murphy and Al Jarrreau when singing Jazz. A Bill Evans wannabe., |
