Music serves as a great inspiration for the musician who creates it as well as the masses who eagerly digest its sounds and rhythms. No matter the point you may rest at during your life’s particular path you can find a song that perfectly embodies your current state of being. It is with that concept in mind that the native Jamaican Bancroft Sutherland a.k.a. Mega Lion sees his music as a “personal remedy” for himself and others. As a youngster growing up in Jamaica it was Bobby Culture withhis song Jack Ruby that influenced Mega Lion to first pursue a career in music under the stage name “Mickey Culture”. Inspired by other roots/cultural and dancehall reggae artist such as Bob Marley Garnett Silk, Tony Rebel, Sizzla and Buju Banton he began to perform along Jamaica’s countryside. It was shortly after moving to Kingston the capital of Jamaica that he changed his name from “Mickey Culture” to “Mega Lion.” While in Kingston he found himself performing his first major concert with Professor Nuts doing a song called “Love Child.” This experience according to Mega Lion “further sparked my passion for music and live performance…being able to connect with the audience and feel their energy.” From there Mega Lion begin competing in several Dee Jaying contest (DJ is the Jamaican term for rapper/singer) and after winning two competitions Mega Lion was picked up by Yard and Broad Promotion where he toured over a two year period with Bennie Man and other reggae artists. Not discouraged from his experiences performing on the same stage with artists who have “made it” but not seeming to get his own break into the industry Mega Lion moved to the United States while continuing to be dedicated to his dream of a singing and performing career. Starting with various local performances in Virginia before moving to New Jersey where he continued to showcase his talent by performing at events held at places such as the Robert Treat Hotel Hilton Hotel, New Brunswick, and at local fashion shows. Mega Lion music style is very diverse with a reggae cultural background mixed with hardcore dancehall flavor. Through his music Mega Lion continuously promotes positive conscience, and uplifting messages. Mega Lion’s motivation for his lyrics comes from everyday situations and his personal journey in both life and music. Now with an experienced and talented team to continue the growth and development of a special talent Mega Lion is ready to share his “remedy” with the masses working on his debut album “Lion Unleashed” scheduled for released in 2007. |
