Paul Epic is an apt name for someone whose journey has seen him push his physical extremes to explore his emotional ones.
His story begins with a young Paul — still years from having the moniker Ronin thrust on him — playing the piano and singing in a gospel choir. And it continues with him funneling his energy and strength into power lifting winning the North American power-lifting championship twice and being crowned the World Champion in 1994. After testing his physical limitations he began battling the limits of speed through motorcycle racing and skydiving. Yet under all that strength and a mosaic of tattoos was also a poet.
So it’s no surprise that his music and his lyrics explore the duality of the human condition — good and bad dark and light. And it’s also no surprise that over the years his friends and family have dubbed him Ronin.
Ronin refers to samurai in feudal Japan who had no master. These nomadic warriors carried two swords which is reflective of our Ronin’s two sides one that who pushes the physical limits through his adrenalin-fueled pursuits and the one that pushes the philosophical limits with his lyrics that delve deep into the psyche.
Ronin’s first band and his album King of the Night reflected the darker side through a more heavy metal sound. His current album South of Heaven, North of Hell, moves his music into a slightly more mainstream realm as he explores the struggle between good and the evil in all of us.
South of Heaven North of Hell features Mike K on guitar bass and keys, Randy Cooke on drums and Chad Gendason and Kelly Moneymaker on backing vocals.
Ronin like his centuries-old namesakes battles the forces of evil today however in more conventional ways. A percentage of his album sales goes to support the Make a Wish foundation. His dreams have come true. He hopes to help kids struggling with illness to have their dreams come true too. He wishes all of you could have your dreams come true. Somewhere South of Heaven North of Hell.
Ronin will be touring with both bands in 2008.
