AMG REVIEW:
by Evan Cater --
Former Jim the Band guitarist Dave Werba marked the beginning of his solo career with this five-song EP, released under the name Mr. Rose....he sings and plays guitars, drums, bass, keyboards, cello, synth, and French horn. They [new songs]do draw some inspiration from Werba's wacky jam rock idols, Phish, who have always been the clearest influence on the guitarist's group work. But the new songs project a mellow psychedelic mood that departs from the Phish sound more than anything Werba wrote for Jim the Band. "The Devil" and "Face of the Lion" seem to borrow as much from late Beatles and Todd Rundgren as they do from Trey Anastasio. The goofy lyrics have been toned down (on the new tracks; "Wild Monkey" is still joyfully outrageous) and even Werba's fretwork seems to subordinate itself to the mood of the music. The EP gives reason for admirers of this talented but often derivative songwriter to hope that Werba has at last found his own voice.

Tomorrow's News:

If the band The Eagles had recorded an album in an enchanted forest while living amongst a group of gypsies, they MIGHT have been able to record something in the realm of 'The Purpose of the Animal' by Mr. Rose.

Mr. Rose -- The Purpose of the Animal:
by Ellen Stenard --
Mr. Rose is less a band and more a one-man musical showcase. David Werba writes, produces, engineers, sings, and plays guitar, percussion, bass, synthesizer, cello, and French horn on this five track EP. Not a small feat for any musician. If you factor in the richness of sound and variety of textures and styles on this disk, it is even more impressive. Mr. Rose evokes the improvisational stylings and musicality of the late sixties. "Wild Monkey" is a hippie guitar pop ride through the influences of late sixties jam bands. The later, and slower paced, songs evoke the moody eeriness of Darkside of the Moon era Pink Floyd with spacey guitars and floating vocal echoes.
I often dislike the sound of vocalists harmonizing with themselves. Too frequently, the result is cold and inhuman sounding, but when Werba layers his vocal harmonies together they are tight and very appropriate to the spaced out mood of his songs. He engineered these tracks with enough skill to keep the vocals in the forefront without losing the nuances of his rhythm section. Ryan Stagg's vocals on the final track add a nice break from Werba's constantly layered voice.
Even the synthesized instruments on this recording sound very organic. Frank Gattone's electric piano on "Summer Breeze" is beautifully understated and Werba's synthesized strings on "Face of the Lion" are warm and unobtrusive.
The Purpose of the Animal is a nicely put together EP. Recorded in Werba's own studio it is easy to get the impression that this is the fruit of one man's ambitious vision. He accomplishes it well, producing songs that are dreamy but not without structure. I hope he is able to locate musicians that can match his skill and piece together a live band, because this style of music is best when heard very, very loud.

JIM the Band -- The Blue Album:
by Darryl Cater --
".... Dave Werba is a Phish fan. His "Wild Monkey" and "Summer Breeze" are two of the tightest, most polished songs on the record; highly listenable word strums (to borrow a Dylan Thomas phrase) in the Phish tradition of zany dadaist meaninglessness ("Why a monkey runs/into the arms of grateful nuns/who are happy as the sun/to caress the monkey's buns")......But because the Phishyness is even more imitative on the follow-up than the debut, I've begun to get antsy for Werba to find his own voice in the jazz fusion."

JIM the Band -- The Way We Are:
AMG Review --
"Pianist Frank Gattone, bassist Barrett Schultz, drummer Bryan Waldo, and (especially) guitarist Dave Werba obviously comprise a slick and finely tuned ensemble, able to make major time and mood shifts on a dime."

BVX -- Oopsmypantsfelloff:
by Jerry McTavish --
"Mr. Rose combines his musical genius with legendary stage antics to build the energy....."

Rhythm Tree -- Rhythm Tree:
by Joseph Filipiak --
"The type of pop Rhythm Tree plays relies more on melody and lyrics than power chords and guitar leads. Not to say guitarist Mr. Rose doesn't play great leads, he does. It's just that he plays solos to enhance the song, as opposed to the song just being the foundation for a guitar lead."

Artist Biography:
David Werba was giving piano recitals in large auditoriums by age 8. Some called him a prodigy others called him an idiot savant and a few called him just "idiot". A middle-aged Indian man with a large beard and a gigantic turban mysteriously took photographs of David at his recitals.
After a brief introduction to the acoustic guitar David began playing the trumpet in junior high. He then explored his vocal boundaries in high school chorus.
After 2 years of social experimentation and intense group observation David grew his hair long. He then taught himself how to play the electric guitar. In perhaps his first moment of musical serendipity David met 4 earnest young men all students at his university. When the quintet realized that they all played different instruments they shouted in unison "Let's Rock". Nurse Rick was born and so was the first influence of Mr. Rose.
Over the next 6 years David subconsciously absorbed the many styles of the numerous bands he played in. He was able to hone his skills and perfect his legendary stage antics by touring nationally and playing over 500 live shows. He has performed on the Jenny Jones show several times and he has opened for a variety of enigmatic bands such as Vanilla Ice The Flaming Lips, and BVX. His musical efficiency has led to instrument proficiency and he composed and performed all of the music and vocals on his album.
It's not quite known when David became Mr. Rose maybe it took a lifetime. But this 'serendipity' this 'cosmic channeling, this 'gift from God' has enabled him to achieve what he has set out to do -- make a difference. Perhaps the middle-aged Indian man with the large turban would like to see what has become of young David maybe he would like to take another photograph.

Dave's bands have also been signed to Indie and Major record labels received mainstream radio air-play played on major television network shows and won several national Talent competitions. Dave's experience leadership, and unique talents will help Music Forte remain at the Top of the Internet World for years to come.
"During the years at the peak of my musical creativity I was stifled by the lack of proper tools and support. I knew the sound I wanted to create in my head but was unable to achieve it with the resources available. One's imagination should be their only boundary not their resources. Advances in technology are fueled by the inherent desire for creative independence and communication with others lead to much greater understanding and direction. Enabling artists to reach their full potential in a healthy environment surrounded by a strong community can only change people's lives in a good way...this is my purpose at Music Forte.
"Tortured artist" and "struggling musician" are phrases that bother me greatly. The two words just shouldn't go together. If we could play a small part at Music Forte, in beginning to render these phrases meaningless to future generations it would be a small part in what would surely become the greatest song ever played." - Dave Werba Founder/President, MusicForte.com
