Terry Childers is a music-warping synth-melting extraordinaire. His songs go to every extreme from earthy dark and melodic “In The Arms Of Dionysus” to pop-rocky ba bada ba ba ba dada’s in “The Replacement” to zany and spacey in “The Future”. I think his muse comes from a galaxy far far away. Even his classic rock style groove songs have the feel of a fresh sound hunting voyage on a small ship with stars whizzing past the little windows. I would know Terry took me out on an excursion once in his spaceship lovingly named The Kathole Hologram Baby. We landed on a clear planet and Terry was given some futuristic musical equipment from the native aliens in exchange for some essence of cool which was actually just Terry’s sweat but the aliens love it. We returned back to earth safely and Terry began toiling away with his new toys to create yet another masterpiece. At Rippyfest we have been very excited to have a diverse talent like Terry Childers on our site. We all dig his music with synthy buzzing beeps and whirs over a back drop of beatnick rythyms. On the other hand Terry is never afraid of just picking up an acoustic guitar singing great lyrics and going organic. INTERVIEW WITH TERRY CHILDERS - OCTOBER 5TH 2006
THE RIPPER- What are the names of the band members and their duty in the band?
CHILDERS- umm the band has been put into hiatus for a while till I can figure out what the hell it is that I do now. However former members include (in no particular order): Big Fat Paul Weisgerber-drums and backup singing,
Robby Hunter-bass backup vox and occasional guitar,
Danial Crane-bass,
Joey Letteer-bass synth noises/textures,
those are really the only people that were in "the band"
when it was Takethatsubspace or Zombiecopter.
I would be completely remiss if I didn’t add the other wonderful musicians who help make my music come to life:
Darius Yavorski-bass drums, guitars, synthy things, and harmony vox,
Chad Mummert- guitars synth, bass, synth drums and some singing here and there,
Kathleen Childers-noise looping vox, texture vox, concepts,
Steven Avonds (aka Slough Of Dispond) synth weirdness synth beauty, and singing,
Lucas Ward-vox textures,
Mike Hilty-programmer to the stars.
Mike Yavorski-vocoder voices.
Thats about all for the recordings that I have posted on internet.
THE RIPPER- How and when did your band form?
CHILDERS- The first Takethatsubspace was started in 2003 when Paulie and Chad came over to my old house and set up drums and acoustic guits to help me flesh out some songs I had written.
THE RIPPER- What and/or who are your inspirations?
CHILDERS- Literature is a big source of input for what I do. A lot of books I read come into my thoughts when I am writing lyrics. I also dig on beat poetry Ginsberg, Gregory Corso and Burroghs. I try to make the songs as non-biographical as possible but sometimes reality and personal things creep through with mixed results. As for musical inspiration I can only tell you what I like to listen to. Zappa The Pixies, Sonic Youth, Tom Waits, Radiohead, Pavement, The Melvins, Flaming Lips, Stereolab, Kraftwerk, Stan Getz and any kind of Samba/Brazilian folk Tom Ze, King Crimson, Yes and Gwar, which is pretty much Zappa with funny costumes and heavy metal.
THE RIPPER- What towns do your band members come from? Where do you reside now?
CHILDERS- I am from a little town called Clarksburg WV., but I live in Plymouth PA. right now. All the musicians I noted before are either from here or have been here so long that it doesn’t count anymore. Paul is originally from Kansas I think. Steven is from Belgium although he was born in the Belgian Congo.
THE RIPPER- What do you consider your style of music to be what genre?
CHILDERS- I think that’s a loaded question. I hate being pigeonholed or limited. Right now I’m doing a lot of electronic weirdness with vocals and heavily effected Ukulele. When I first started I learned bass and sang moving on to acoustic guitar and actual songwriting. Then someone said "you should record this stuff with a rock band" so I did that too. Maybe next month it will all be Tuvanese folk singing with a punk feel and marimbas. That’s not a half bad idea....
THE RIPPER- Do your band members have day jobs also or are you full-time musicians?
CHILDERS- Not at the rate I work...the players are all 40+ hour a week workers of the wage slave variety myself included, with the exception of Darius who has moved to Oregon to play bass in a few working bands along with his own solo stuff and band Kairos-Time.
THE RIPPER- Are you on a record label?
CHILDERS- Nah. I don’t think they are ready for me yet. If someone did want to publish my stuff and the plum was sweet enough I would do it. It would have to be better than doing everything myself.
THE RIPPER- Please list your albums and release dates.
CHILDERS- I have made a handful of tapes and discs but I think I only ever sold like 3 of them. I mostly give them to my friends when they ask for them which is more often than even I can believe.
THE RIPPER- Do you feel that music is your calling? If so why?
CHILDERS- I hope so. I like doing things that are only limited by my imagination and ability. That’s hard to find in accounting clerical work or washing dishes and stuff.
THE RIPPER- Please share a short story about the best worst, or funniest experience
having to do with a live performance.
CHILDERS- Playing with Darius in a band called "Freaquence" that we wrote the material for in about 2000. We put up a space themed show with crazy black light stuff and outer space wallpaper and toy laser guns. A small bar here in Plymouth allowed us to set up this freak show (Flecknoe's rest in peace) and we invited tons of people. Maybe 60 people total showed up maybe more. I didn’t work the door and a friend of ours was dressed as a giant orange baby. I think someone showed up dosing people with a psychedelic substance and there were tripping idiots playing laser gun battles along with our 40 minute space/noise/improv freak-out. It was madness.
THE RIPPER- Is there anything you want the world to know about your music?
CHILDERS- I just want everyone to hear how much care I put into making it. I try not to do too much "wanking" with it and I think I know the difference between music and just plain audio or noise. Maybe one day I will find out otherwise.
